Fabricators....I Need a hand getting my car done
April 20, 2009 03:13PM
Hey guys, I really need to get my car done, but I need a fabricator to build a box around the filler portion of my fuel cell to meet the god damn rules. I am an OK fabricator, but I am not comfy doing this job. The factory surround for the cell is steel, so we can weld directly to that, but the top of the box we need to build around the filler cap needs to be removable in order to fill the car with gas.

I am willing to pay for your time, and I can give a weekend of my time and take care of supplies involved, and transport everything to you. It just needs to be done, and I am not confidant enough to do it on my own in my po-dunk half-assed shop that doesn't even have a brake to bend steel...

Anyone out there down to lend a hand?

If you are willing to go to non rally folks - Ballard Sheet Metal in get this Ballard on Ballard Ave. Last time I had them do something for me right before a rally it cost me a bottle of wild turkey and it was done over lunch...

I can loan you a brake if that'd help.

How are you thinking of doing the Q/R lid?

The quick release lid is the only way we can afford to do it....otherwise we are looking at well over $500 in fittings, hose and/or fabrication to make it work. I can't afford to fill my car with race fuel, so $500 is well out of the budget for us.

Okay so you're talking about just a box around the filler neck? Is the filler neck going all the way to the outside of the car? Or basically you want to be able to open the hatch, quick release the cover and fill up?

Do you have a picture of your current setup sans box?

yeah, I don't need a box for the whole cell, I am just bastardizing the current box to meet the rules without spending $500 on hose and fittings and still need build a new box for the cell.

with box:

without:

The filler plate will be a different filler plate as well...building a box around the elongated fill tube would be too much of a bitch...plus Hurst didn't like having the fill tube attached to a tube that could possibly bend.

What I meant was do you want to use dzeus or what? I remember your plan from when I dropped the fill plate off over there

Holy shit Tom, you still have a lot of work to do! Why don't you give me a call. I think that I could help you out if we can work a deal for some of your old strut inserts.

So you need 4 walls around the filler and then a shoe box style lid, and then latch it with those from the side? will that work?

That is really sad that such a nice and safe looking fuel set-up would need further boxes around things. Silly.

I have a crazy idea: What about instead of building a box, you just cut the filler neck and put a valve in it? Basically make the filler neck no longer a filler neck?

Whole issue is just stupid if you ask me.

What sort of time-frame you looking at. I'm hesitant to volunteer because I've got so much stuff to do on my own car.

I ran into this problem before with the CRX. My lesson learned: don't bother with fuel cells. Expensive and don't add much if anything to performance, safety may be negligible.

Robert: Looks can be deceiving, we are very far along in the process, we took on alot of work when we got the car to make it what we wanted, but it got me into a good shell asap. The cell is my only big ticket item left to complete...other than completing the re-done factory wiring harness.

Timm-shoe box with three latches should work ok, or a flanged top mount and cork seal, just welded on to the fuel cell top plate, that would meet the current rules after seam sealing the inside corners of the box.

Kris-I don't expect help from local competitors that are in the process of trying to make it to Idaho...The whole box and cell need to be sealed anyways, the filler neck needs to be detached from the rollcage tubing, and on its own it is weak as the filler flange is only attached to the plastic cell insert inside the fuel cell. The valve wouldn't meet the rules because it isn't sealed from the driver's compartment...the rule is amazingly redundant, and I wouldn't recommend that anyone try and put a fuel cell into a two-box car unless they have plenty of money to waste on things that don't help you go that much faster

It kills me that this setup needs to be changed in any way....if anything touches this fuel cell where it sits, I wouldn't need to worry about the fire.

Tom come over meet up with Robert and me and drag the car over to his nice warm garage.
He'll get it done.
He's been having sporadic extra time and could use the dough for bad projects---like his Golf.

I'd trust him on my own stuff.

I DO trust him on my own stuff.
