Try a regular machine shop, not just ones that do auto stuff but ones that do production machining. Prussion Blue dye or 'bluing' is what you want.

Prussian blue and blue dye are two different things. I doubt if the dye will work very well.

I've got a box full of marking paste packs at the shop ...Get one with every new gear set .. Any Gear shop should have the stuff all over too..One pack should last you for ever... Can mail some real stuff... Find a Jeep OEM books from the 60's is ware the "only" complete and full info in writing is living ... All other books are off.. Heres one .. Before marking past .. We took red cement die and 90w .. We had a jar red die for years .. Just a table spoon of 90w.. add die to mix to paste goo.. small paint brush ..paint on paste goo.. did three diff's a week for ten years that way and had been done that way senses the 40's in real gear shops...Everyones shocked when they find this out..LOL.. Before that it was "red lead" and oil.. Ford used that on the Model A.... But thats nasty stuff..( I'm speaking of drops of oil here.. And table spoons of die .. You're Captain Gear Box Fucking God and you can't use prussian blue? Hmm, works fine for me. Or even white lithium in a pinch.

Too bad you're not Captain Coherent Sentence because none of that made any sense. Kinda like a cell phone with bad reception and you're only getting bits and pieces of what the person is saying. But yeah, the red cement dye stuff works really well, too.

White lithium worked just fine here... You could clearly see what you needed (ok, maybe not super clear as using the "right" stuff, but clear enough that you new what was going on)

David,

Well captain gear box.........I work at a Caterpillar dealer and set up quite a few gear sets that cost more than most cars. I use what Cat recommends, prussian blue.

Pulling rank.......hummmm.......I'm 39 with 15 years Cat experience and am a certified field service anylist. I also have a degree in diesel and heavy equipment technology and have been an instructor at the local tech school. I feel well qualified to recommend prussian blue as an efective gear marking compound.
