Any "backyard" gear marking compounds someone could recommend.

i'm not sure i'll find the "real" stuff.

heard of people using White Lithium grease, or tooth paste!

Prussian blue dye. You should be able to get it at any good auto parts store. I have a tube made by Permatex.

Whats this for? Do you coat the gears and then turn the box by hand to find high spots?

"good", and "auto parts store" should not be used in the same sentance.

i'll try Napa on the way home though...they are the best i've found.

Tim,

You use the prussian blue to see the gear tooth contact pattern.

How does it help? Is it for shimming the gears left and right to make them mesh better?

Tim, mainly used when setting up a rear end differential to ensure good tooth contact and long life.

White lithium. Coat both sides of about 5 or 6 teeth in a row and turn at least a complete revolution of the ring gear both directions. Then you can see where the pinion redeposits the white lithium on the clean gear teeth.

White lithium worked...

but only after i tore the box open, found a completely broken Pinion gear, and missing teeth from the ring gear!!!

So much for the 4.44

Dropped in a 4.11 gear set, and changed my gear ratio also.

Still no idea what the diff is. Looks like it may be a cusco of some sort...

Well you can use a dab of White lithium on the end of a screw driver to reach in and pick up fragments.

Might be better, I know Pat richard was saying sometimes he uses 4.1 if he needs some km/hr cause it sure ain't going do it with revs.

Hey Chris, you going help Dave Amor get his bushes in? They should be almost there and you still have the press tool and dingle ball hone (which I want back after Dave is done with it) Give him a call, would ya?
Thanks

THe 4.44's break all the time. Even the Prodrive $700 allegedly strengthened (just look shot peened to me) ring and pinions break just as easily. I have stack of broken 4.44 R&P gears at my shop.

are the 4.11's better??

i figure with the super FLAT torque curve i've got, keeping it in the power band a little longer and using the torque instead of just spinning it up so quick might actually just be ok.

You're right, it may actually be better for your faster roads.
