So sometime in 1998 or so Subaru swapped to the "tripod" inner CV joints on the 5 spd transmissions.



What's better??? The tripod style or the 6 balls in a cage??

Recently tried some aftermarket shafts and blew all the needle bearings out of the tripod joint.

I think GM used tripods for lots of heavy FWD cars with no huge issues, although it was a pretty big axle.

I'm not sure why but I think the ball stlye allows more range of motion.

I also think that much of todays new replacemnt parts are made "off shore" and I'm not sure of the quality from day to day.

So..an absolutley positive I'm not sure

I've only seen busted balls...

That being said the majority of the axles I've had experience with are pre 1998...

I couldn't agree more!

And to add to the consensus, I have seen MFGs using both on same models, both on rally cars and ebven Formula cars and Touring cars, I have seen both.
Therefore I conclude that while its obvious i have no idea why one vs the other i know I'm in good company with the Comrades here and in design bureaus who can't make up their minds either.
