JVAB suspension install
May 05, 2009 08:14PM

Not too rough, we had to make some slight adjustments to the subframe and A-arms to account for a bit more droop, but after clearancing and some minor reinforcement, everything is a perfect fit.

the lineup:

Bilstein rear on the left and a custom front on the right for a comparo to the JVAB goodness

We used our already pretty neat Selholm Tuning Strut bearings in conjunction with John's stuff for a pretty awesome setup.

rear tops are some cool stainless goodies

They fit real well into the back end

LONG!

Full droop is fully awesome

and the car sits off jack stands for the first time this year....some minor ride height adjustments and we will be ready for testing and tuning

Nice B-Boys!

You will love the JVAB stuff. We have been loving ours since 2003 or 2004. No problems at all except that our stock ears have begun to wallow out from too many big jumps.

Can't wait for Rally Idaho... MaxAttack!!!!

Gene, you start cutting checks and I am right back out there again...

We WILL be at Idaho no matter what.

You'd be surprised at how much work we really put into this car....still some significant work to do, but you gotta take solice in the little stuff that makes a big difference. Now, back to the wiring!

Very Nice. I can't wait till I get mine. It looks like I'm coming off a similar setup to what you had as well. What did you do to the subframe to get the axle to clearance?

The A-arms needed to be adjusted in the inner rear corner next to the bushing (the stamped metal just needed to be bent down a bit to allow for clearance at full droop).

And the subframe needed to be adjusted down about 1/4" on the passenger side where the front portion of the A-arm bolts up. I just used a bit of heat, a sledge and a long piece of DOM to make the necessary clearancing adjustments, then when I was done I put a bead on the seams to keep everything in place.

the average person probably wont need to do this, we had to because we used our fancy pants strut tops, Johns tops would've allowed the right clearance and you probably wouldn't have needed to clearance anything.

Next time you get some inserts, get them thru me and then we have about an inch shorter upper body for the same shaft travel, m'ky?

Ron McF and Ozgur and JoshieW got Ford 41mm inserts which have shorter bodies and same travel

Hey Rob!! What top mounts you using again???

I was going to use the subie top mounts as per your advice. Haven't had a vw fail on me yet... I'd like to keep it that way! I know nothing of the subie mounts. Is there a difference in year or can I just grab a pair off any impreza? Those struts look like fun. John really does do nice work.

THe front ones are all the same but it's woth it to get the Group N ones (Might be the same as U.S. STi, I dunno) because they are made of harder durometer rubber and much firmer and not so likely to fail.

Wow good looking stuff there Tom.

John - how long of threads do you normally cut on the top of the front struts? it looks like Tom needs a bit more to get to the nylon portion of the top nut? The Brumeister strut tops I've got need quite a bit of length to get all the way through the bearing, the OEM length was barely enough to get a thread started.
