OK OK sure the GropeN rubber is harder, but aren't those Sub-a-arts like 3200lbs? And have rip snortin, a rootin and a tooting powerz? I really think for weeeeenie little low powered 2400lb Golves the standard reasonably fresh from the wrecking yard any Subie from 89 on top mount oughtter do just dandy. And cost $5. I've never run the Group N mounts, but probably should if you listen to all the interweb speak.
I just run reasonably fresh mounts from whatever i've got around. Replace them if i find an issue, as i normally have the struts off for a regrease after every 2nd rally...sometimes sooner. Only problem is when the bearings start going a little bit ronchy...but you can fix that up with some brake clean and clean grease. Chris |

Sure, put $5 top mounts on your $1500 or even $5000 suspension. Now your top mounts are softer than the suspension and moving around, not letting the shocks do the work. Stock ones do fail (though the fronts aren't nearly as bad as the rear) and an entry fee is a lot more than the cost of what you saved on the mounts. The stock ones are pretty soft and old ones can already be partially sagging. Do what you want, just throwing some advice out there...

Yeah, I make mine to the length needed for some kind of bearing--either the Subaru top---preferred--or a spherical bearing like I did for Robert "Rallymech" Service Nazi. In Tom's case he had the truly beyond Sooooper Bitching Sellholm top mounts which are beautiful bet complicated parts with a spherical bearing like normal, but also a radial needle bearing, and a tall roller bearing and while it is slicker than shit, it costs length. His inserts were what everybody always starts with and those are cut at the top for the ultra-cheezoid "two circles of an old beer can and 5 BBs" OEM VW bearing which is maybe 4mm thick max. The Sellholm top mounts really want their own top pin, and seeing the whole thing assembled I now know where we could shave off a coupla mm to get the nyloc engaged. In Roberts case it was just making spacers to fill the gap between the 14mm VW pin and the ID of the 7/8" spherical bearing I use (7/8" being about .005 from 22mm which is what works Fords used, so big enough for Ford at WRC level in a 1230kg car, ought to be good enough for mere mortal Vee wee guys) Clearly a big FAT 19-20mm diameter pin lives linger than a 14 x 1,5mm threader pin but the fat thang demands some sort of custom top mount and that costs ~~150+ bucks Hence the suggestion of the Subie mounts---which naturally presumes one actually LOOK AT the junk yard ones and see if they're tip top shape. Plenty in the yards, no reason to grab the first car you see and its just 4 quick nuts to spin off to pull them in position. By the way when you guys wonder why I say "Well it's about this much or so" on cost, look at this: last three or four Golves all had different configurations of the strut inserts, top mount pins and ears. That's why there's always some uncertainty in what the final bill will be. It always depends on the particulars of the installation. > > __________________________________________________ > _________ > Demon Rally Team :: Fine Tuning > RalleyTuned | Meister Gauge Faces | Spitfire EFI | > Product Apparel | Techtonics Tuning > > Myspace or Facebook > > Next Event: Max Attack!!! Tom, I noticed that the new struts don't have the fancy little clip guy for the brake line. What are you doing about that? Are you just not restraining the line? Are you zip tying it to the strut? Forgive my ignorance, I'm going to be getting my new JVL's soon and I would rather not blow a brake line because I'm stupid. Any help or advice is appreciated.
Thanks! |

zip ties will probably go on, I didn't even think of that, but it shouldn't be too big of an issue, I really don't see the need to zap on the brakeline holder up frontthey might rub against the tire on occasion but that would be about it I think
