Camel Backs....
May 18, 2009 11:57PM
Anyone rig a camel back up to their seat in their rally car? I've been thinking about it as I love having my camel back when I'm out biking. It would hold more water then bottles (per unit, obviously) and is more easily accessible while transiting (I dont think I'd want to try to use it during a stage, haha).

A camel back with a few extra water bottles (maybe gatorade like when I go biking) seems like it would be a good fit for the hot rallies, like this oregon trail was. What do you think?

I codrove in a car with a Camelback once (OT 06). I've never peed so much in my life, but I emptied it every leg. I wanted to back hand the driver though when he reached for it and took a drink mid stage. If you're focused 100% on driving things like thirst, heat, or the need to blink shouldn't really affect you when the stage is hot.
I prefer water bottles, plus I get to feel good about myself when I recycle them all after the event. 24 packs are usually cheap.

I use a camelback but usually stick granola bars and water bottles in it. We mount it behind the codriver on the horizontal bar.

With superhuman effort and top physical shape a guy in his early 30s ought to be able to survive, just barely, the grueling 6-14 minutes of a stage without replenishing their fluids.

Man up.

Ozgur, so you mainly use it as a backpack, or you also shove bottles into it?

Grant, I wouldnt be using it during stages, that seems like a horrible idea. Just transits, basically. Just another way to carry some water.

My driver and I both have them. With all the crap allready in the car, it's a nice way to store the water. No worries about it rolling around durring the stage.

And, there's just nothing like the taste of 3 month old water on the way to the first stage... Yummmmmy!

I have them in my car. They fit well hanging on the shoulder wings of the seats. Easy to access on transits.

Grant you could feel good about your self everytime you refill your camelbak since reusing is usually better than recycling.

Was wondering if anyone was going to catch that...
We were talking this weekend about using a camelback filled with ice and water to transport beer on stage, just in case you DNF and the nearest marshalls/spectators don't have any beer.

Now that's GOOD THINKING!

But. you could just have a small cooler----carefully secured of course with an ICE PROOF lid secured by locking clips with a few of the best beers you chose to take with you.
There really isn't any rule saying you CAN'T except maybe Rally America's about no-imflammable fluids like washer fluid.
(Damn another place to fill with beer!)

PS> Near gate C8 at PDX you can buy a growler of beer for $18 to smuggle onto the airplane.
PPS> You can finish one of these easily between three people on a 2 hour flight. Recommend buying a beer too so it's not suspicious to the flight attendants.
Don't bother trying to save the growler jug though. It will probably break during the chariot races in luggage carts in the parking garage. (Don't worry, I have video...)

in my opinion JVL is right (gasp!). you can survive a ten minute stage and there is plenty of time at regroups and time controls between services to get out, open the hatch and get what you need while you shoot the shit with everyone else.

Think 'Grolsch' (with the ceramic tops w/rubber stoppers and are secured on via steel wire), but they make them bigger too.

I used camelbacks last year co-driving. Its very nice/convenient. and I already have about 5 of them sitting around for backcountry stuff, so I might as well hook one up to the car. (for me at least, my co-driver can figure out his own fluids)

Yeah, Jon, thats pretty much What I figure. I have a just bladder one, and a bladder/back pack, both 3 liters. I plan on getting two more though, one for me, and one for my brother. I need a bigger one for longer bike rides, lol
