Chris, I rallied almost exclusively on Michelin cast offs from ACP...they really last a very long time and were strong and didn't exhibit any cracking/delamination as i've seen with other brands.

If you can find them I would buy used BFG/Michelin/Pirellis and run them to the cords.

As for the Egan roads, they should be pretty easy on tires, even when its warm, the Yokohama softs seem to be more like Pirelli mediums (K4's) so they should do really well on those roads. I've had a look ar the roads a few times in the past month, they are in good shape and have a sandy base.

John...your gonna make me mount of these super trick winking smiley softs up for Bear aren't you!

I'm still debating about things...hmmmmm.

I still have to wonder if a fresh tire..from anyone would be faster than a used up Mich/Pirelli. Something tells me that the sharp edges are where it's at...but i could be wrong.

And what's ACP doing with michelins?!!!

These were from at least 3-4 years ago, before his Yoko sponsorship. I actually bought every Michelin that John had left, roughly a dozen ZAs now, which are probably pretty damn hard but do the trick for me.

Well, I think ACP was running Michelins in the states and Yokos in Canada, I think. In any case they held up very well given the power of the car and decent results for us.

Chris, what are you trying to achieve? Best performance outright, used mich/pirelli over new yoko/hankook etc? Or overall bang for the buck? Bottom line you can get good used tires from well funded teams for less than the cost of any new tire, and I liked how they performed much better than the lower priced brands.

Chris, want to buy some Yokohama softs? I have 4, barely have the numbs off em (car 99 duties)

I dunno, I think Falkens seem alright. That's what I've been running for awhile. I ran Idaho with a mildly worn set of mediums and they seemed good to me. Of course, after I adjusted the tire pressure properly, they worked better! smiling smiley
I'm no professional on rally tires, but Falken has done fine for me. I'll be running a brand new, two+ year old set of Falken softs this year in Idaho (so will that make them falken hards, since they've sat for awhile?) I'm saving my used hard michelins for Colorado.

If you're going to be trying to "get every last ounce" of the tires... then it doesn't really matter what you have. Someone else will be buying new tires that will be faster than whatever shaving, slicing, grooving, conditioning, etcetera you do.

So get whatever you like the sound of. smiling smiley

Chirs,

I had new Pirelli's at Lannark.. first time ever had new gravel tires, I was amazed at the difference it made. But I wore 1/3 of the tread off in 50km (soft compound). I plan to use these for BB, then they'll probably be done. I had some nearly new Hankooks (71) compound, they were godo, but nothing like the Pirelli's. I haven't tried much else except cast off Silverstones (tough as hell).

Note: the Pirelli are heavy.. didn't actually weigh, but they seem way heavier than teh Kooks... and they are a fucking pain in that ass to mount. We lubed the crap out of them, and couldn't get them out on the bead. We ended up using stupid pressure... I've heard similar stores from others.

I'd love to try Michelin/BFG

John V I might be interested in those Yokohamas.

-Martin.
