Ok, so, most rally cars are running the stock dash modified to fit with the roll cage. A few have custom dashes. Mine didnt come with a dash....
so... I have a sheetmetal brake and ample sheet aluminum, would it be worth fabbing up a quick dash and getting it flocked or felted to take care of glare/reflection? OR Should I just go hunting for a cheap/free corolla dash? Do most cars run these because it 1) came with the car, 2) is quick and easy, and 3) came with the car? Either way, I'm going to have to fabricate mounts for it, and either way, im going to be modifying it for a new cluster and a switch/fuse panel... Which would my best bet be? Over here we have a rule about having to leave most of the stock dash in, unless the homologation says you can fabricate something.
Most homologation papers does not allow for uoriginal dashes. If you're free to choose, I would still go with the original. Brgrds Brian ![]() |

Particularly as a basis for something to build on. Particularly since every fully fabricated dash I've ever seen looks like utter crap. Start with the basic dash, add and subtract what you need. > > Brgrds > Brian > > John Vanlandingham Sleezattle, WA, USA Vive le Prole-le-ralliat www.rallyrace.net/jvab CALL +1 206 431-9696 Remember! I think you know my opinion on this, but i will give it again for public consumption:
I had an aluminum fabbed dash in the bunny....The defroster barely worked on occasion, the dash looked good, but there were sharp edges everywhere, it saved little weight, cost money, and was a pain in the butt to make and mount. new car- gets a factory dash, side and center vents are plugged, defroster plumbing works awesome, mounting is cake, dash looks good, no sharp edges, its light weight plastic and pleather, came with the car, and I don't have to build up a bunch of garbage to mount and stop it from rattling.... its a no brainer, less work and money means more rally time: ![]() -Tom DemonRallyTeam | Fine Tuning | CTS Turbo & RP Turbos | RalleyTuned | JRM | Meister Autowerks Spitfire EFI | Product Apparel | JVAB Imports | NLS | AP Tuning | USRT Add us on Facebook | Next Event: 2013 Olympus Rally June 22-23 Olympia, WA |

The defroster thing can be an issue, as well as sharp edges. It is nice having the factory padding in place if you happen to smack a hand during a wreck. Of course that is a non issue if your car never gets done

We did something I've never seen anyone else do, and it seems to work really well, and is the lightest dash you can make.
It is black canvas, cut and hemmed, with velcro stiched in along the window (thanks Mom). On the back side, we have a loop enclosure and a flexible fiberglass rod, that fits a couple little sockets tacked to the roll cage. Holes are cut for the defroster, which works pretty well, although we have some vents that we were going to put in. We've fabricated dashes in the past, and like Tom says it is a PITA, and just isn't worth the hassle. Stock dashes are quite heavy, and can be pretty hard to clearance for a dash bar. We went this way because I wanted it light, but also wanted good anti-glare and something that can be added and removed quickly for maintenance. It has worked out great on all accounts, and it is something that I wish the car I'm working on this weekend had, would save me a lot of time. |

I like that design for ease of reaching the back components, the fuse box is in a good location and everything can be reached by both occupants, very cool.
The only reason why I wouldn't go with a stock dash is if it wouldn't work in the car, my dash shell weighs something like 7-15 lbs and everything is layed out really well for us. I'll put up some semi- finished images of what we have soon. -Tom DemonRallyTeam | Fine Tuning | CTS Turbo & RP Turbos | RalleyTuned | JRM | Meister Autowerks Spitfire EFI | Product Apparel | JVAB Imports | NLS | AP Tuning | USRT Add us on Facebook | Next Event: 2013 Olympus Rally June 22-23 Olympia, WA |

I can't any pictures of the XR's custom dash right now. This summer I plan to "adjust" a stock dash to replace the custom dash. 2 stock dashes acquired for the price of free this afternoon, and now one is living in place. Now I just need to fab a few brackets to make it stick better. The bubble gum seems to be holding... for now...

That first McNeil was basically what I was going to do way back before all the carbon pre preg I had expired more... grr, or just bend up an aluminum one to fit my cluster bezel into. But I was able to find a free dash(es).
