I'm running a MK1 Rabbit with larger front brakes off a 16V. Right now it has Minex pads which were on it when I bought it, I ran a hillclimb this weekend and really feel like upgrading the pads before Rally NY next week. Anyone have suggestions on a good pad to go with? Right now I'm looking at EBC "Green Stuff" or "Yellow Stuff" and Hawk "blue".

I'm a big EBC fan.....yellows (or reds) for sure, but definitely not greens. the yellows are very affordable and actually very usable on the street too.

I've been using Ferodo DS2500's with good success. They take a beating and hardly wear at all. Brakes work good. I bought them from some internet brake store, it was like $180 for pads for all four wheels.

I second the Porterfield suggestion. R4s or R4 compund will work fine...
I had such bad experiences with EBC stuff when they came out that I wouldn't run them on ANY car if they gave them away for free... Tried them on my bicycle too with EXTREMELY poor results... ____________________________________________________________- One. Axxis Ultimate seemed to work okay on our car at RTN. (ceramic)
the Hawk brake pads we ran at RNY caused sparks to shoot out the wheels. our wheels now have a huge amount of "rotor material" heat welded to them. they look aweful. dem wheels are shot! and the brand new rotors are worn down to the point that there is a penny or paperclip thickness missing from them. dem rotors are shot! ...the metallic Hawk pads did stop like hell tho, i had to keep telling the driver to brake late because he was braking early and almost comming to a stop. |

Yeah front and rear, compared to $40 street pads I was pissed about costs, but if I can save money in one spot I get to race more, so I tend to be a bit thrifty

I get all my brake pads from livermoreperformance.com
To get R4's for front/rear it's $146/$59. You don't get a NASA/SCCA discount from their prices, they're pretty damn cheap by themselves. I also had ordered a set of R4e compound pads and shoes (yes shoes) for my 24 hours of LeMons race car. I've bought my track pads for my STI (Pagid Yellow RS 19) and the Porterfield R4S pads for street pads when I downgraded the STI brakes to WRX 4/2 pots. Although I HATE the R4s on my STI. The damn things squeal like pigs under heavy braking which is annoying as hell on the street. Look up my autox videos on youtube under the user billyelliotx to hear it in my autocross videos. On the VW GTI I run Hawk HP-10's that I got through tirerack. They leave a terrible coating that rusts just about everything in your wheel area (rotor/caliper/strut/wheels) but they do stop the car and do hold up to the heat of rallying (glowing rotors were reported being seen on spectator point at Passmore during LSPR). I'd rather not use them again just for the corrosive rust layer it puts on everything. But I've ran LSPR and Snow*Drift and the pads are in good shape. Will probably need new rotors after NEFR though. |

FWIW, I've faded/glazed EBC Greens autocrossing in the Mini (very light car) so badly it was frightening to drive home. They came back to life after I roughed up the surface of the pads with an angle grinder but I wouldn't use them in anger -- ever.
