Air Filters
June 16, 2009 03:47PM
I'm pretty sure this has been discussed on here before, but I couldn't find it. N-E way, what is the best type of air filter to get? Do paper ones hold up well enough for a rally? Or should I go with the sorta hard to clean expensive re-usables?

If I remember ...the stock AC Delco filters are some of the best paper ones around. BUt if you get any water not so good. Get a re-usable. K&N is available nearly everywhere these days.

Ben, with all the dirt, i'd also get a prefilter too. (or a filter wrap)

Yeah we use a K&N with a Prefilter/Filtercharger. They can make the pre-filters custom if need be for cheap.

They keep a lot of the dirt/mud/silt and water out of the filter, doesn't seem to be much downside.

Good point for those horrible dry conditions.

gene's right about paper, it is GOOD but the swell when wet, and cut off airflow.
They DO filter the water though!

Ben,

I think that paper filters are ok if they are in an OEM box. Otherwise the K&N with a filter wrap works well also. The K&N is what I am running in my Golf.

If you are still using the OEM box you can even save money by buying the Ford Branded K&N for less cash than you can get the K&N version.

Alright, so its pretty much an absolute that I should run re-usables, and I am running the stock box. Thats cool, 'cause thats what I have. Although I may have cleaned it the wrong way. I sprayed carb cleaner all over it, then rinsed it down with the garden hose. Bad idea? It still looks dirty. :/

So this filter wrap, is that for a cold air intake? Would you recommend switching to that, (maybe not immediately, but down the line a ways)?

If you have one of the K&N ones. Get the recharge kit from a K&N dealer it has a special cleaner and the oil you need to reapply to get it to work properly after you clean it.

its OK, we're all thinking it.

pre-filters aren't just for 'cold air intakes'...its just a piece of foam that goes on/around the filter. So if you have a panel filter, you can just get a square piece and drop that on top of the panel filter. Its just helps filter out more junk, but still pretty high flowing.

How do I deal with all these dead grasshoppers on my filter. smiling smiley There is at least two and one bee that I can see.
We had a KN collapse on itself due to too much dirt and mud on it once on a turbo Subaru.

The "special" cleaner smells exactly like Purple cleaner,is purple in color, does the same job, and rinses with water. You can also hit up your local MC store and get spray air filter oil for alot less.
