Beware the K&N air filter in some instances. A friend put a new one on his Power Stroke and got about 2 blocks before it died. Wouldn't restart. I just happened upon the scene and after a few minutes of digging around I found the instructions for the filter in his turbo blades. Seems the instructions had been shoved inside the AF , which was a cone shaped CAI setup. He never looked inside the filter just put it on. Luckily it didn't seem to hurt the turbo.

I'm using a $20 spectre cone filter. It's good enough for now but I Would really like to go back to a paper filter since they should filter better.

I think it was Matt Johnston's Civic that last year had a inexpensive KN rip off cone filter fail leading to a DNF. (May be wrong though) It was shortly before his chinese Garrett rip off ebay turbo failed if I recall correctly.

Yeah. I've seen that happen on another motor that came into the shop I worked at too. Subaru running like poo. Tore it down and found the cheap cone airfilter's cap
someplace naughty. New engine time.

I had the exact same thing that happened to Matt Johnston happen to my GTX. The turbo sucked in the metal cap from the "inner" filter. Thank god it got logged in the intake, as if it had made it to the turbo.....that would of been really bad. I will never again run a filter that is made of multiple parts. the K&N i have now is all kind of molded together, without any part glued on.
