I have to agree with John. The XR is already kinda heavy, no need to add extra weight that you might at some point in time possibly need.

In the 20 years I have driven rallys I have never carried 2 spares however if I had to run say Newatzel the 35 miles stage back to back on a hot day in a powerful 2wd car I might.

I have had as many as 5 flats in one day not hitting anything and I have had two flats on one stage but still think 1 is plenty for the vast majority of stuff. To carry two I would strap another one over the first one and had my mount set up for that.

In the long run reality always wins.

I seldom carry two, but I like the option. I HAVE needed two before... First time was at Laughlin when nobody knew if the stage would be dirt or snow, and everyone had to choose tires before they could see the surface. Stages were 100+ miles from the nearest town worthy of a weather report, and far enough, in both miles and altitude, from any telephones that nobody could call a gas station or anything clever like that. I ran on new gravels (Kumho) and had two chewed up gravels (Michelin) in the trunk.

Turned out to be snowy, and when I got stuck (on flat ground, between stages) I was able to swap to the chewed up tires, which had just enough grip that I could get into the stage and get stuck at a hill.

Next day, I put chains on the tires in the trunk, just in case we ran into another hill. Never used them...
