Indeed. Some sort of anti-backwash valve?
I was prepared for battle when I tried to bleed mine and it turned out to be a complete piece of cake. I pumped the foot brake with the handbrake lever pulled all the way back, and then when I got bored with that I worked the handbrake to finish bleeding the system. Took less than ten minutes.
