Yet another RWD thread
September 05, 2009 10:01PM
so since the air force is deciding to plop me into a pro-rally area for next four years, i might as well take advantage. I have a talon for rallycrossing action. i am hoping to get into real mans rallying here soon. I really dont plan on doing it to win, more to just have fun. So it leads me to the 2wd class. running a front wheel driving car might be faster but the rear wheel drive easy of rear seems nice.

I am also hoping to pick up someones rally car used. So what should i really look for then? The Merkur seems like a popular choice. I have history with rx7s although they are cramped. Are there any other choices i should look for?

Odd you should mention RX& and movinbg to Idaho, there's some guy out there who comes on occasionally just to bitch me out and seems really fuckin angry and he's a RABID RX7 fanatic.
I just happen top know one sitting for quite a while that has a Legal cage and comes with a spare car and a pile of parts.
Pretty good deal.
Needs decent suspension but geeze I'm like 3.7 miles away, and I make pretty decent suspension.
One the other hand, we could find you a cheap Xratty shell and collect all the boring bits like engines and trannies for cheep cheep.
My friend and semi-partner William has some spare rollers and I or we have been given a couple of more and storage is as always an issue.
We should talk.

Jason "Frumby" is probably here right now in WA just up from NAS Meridian,

how funny would that to have 2 Xratties built from two guys from down there?

well i can assure you will an rx7 fanatic, i tend to buy all kinds of weird piles of mechanical garage.

Being that im 6' even, the rx7 seems a bit...tight...and that is before i get personal with a tree.

The xr4ti seems like a practical and proven choice. Only thing is all my experience with rotaries, also with connections and spares would be nice to translate.

Well one major plus with the Xratties is they are about the simplest modern car around and takes extraordinary effort to actually hurt the damn 2,3 Ford lump-o-iron

William will be bendinbg up a cage for his and I advised he bend up a few more since there seems to be some more getting built so I'll ask what we can do with some of the rollers "we" are babysitting.

No second gen.

Any ideas of price?
Around $4000 with the extra car and all the mpuntains of stuff.

Completion
> etc?

Belts, and suspensers, gas and go.

>>>Cage out of date?
No as far as I can see
Was a Cascade cage do more than needed at the time.
Might need a few small trifles, maybe.

Yea! We made it! Great to be back in the PNW although we really will miss alot of things about the deep south. Let me close on this house, move in etc and I'll be in touch.

either direct sounds tempting. But im still thinking the Xr4ti might be the "smarter" choice. Depends on the what the budget calls for though.

But the budget all depends on how much you do.
And there are many many do-it-yourself things you can do to save hundreds of dollars.

Of course that takes time so you have to finger out the teeter-totter between saving money and getting the project done.

Bear in mind one majope reason I push the Xratty and for that matter the Volvo 240 is so we can shove in t5 Borg Warners and have ratios as good as any turbo car out there in 1-4th----which will get you to 120mph and THEN, slot in 5th which can be 0.68 or 0.73 overdrive.

That almost "2 stage" box lets a Xratty or Volvo guy cruise in 5th at less revs than a stock street car in any ratio less than 4.56.

Tranists are nice, you can actually drive the car someplace and you could do the far lower cost long distance Monte-Carlo format events here in the PNW which while not intense, are still good fun---if you don't get too deep into the timekeeping part.

Can't do that with any other gearbox.

what is the cost factor to a caged Xr4ti? Since there is already a "readyish" to go mazda floating around, that is a tempting idea pending i fit in the cursed thing with a helmet

You should call on the phone.

that would be right up my alley. Aside from the cage, i can handle anything else that needs done. I just dont feel like leaving my safety in my own hands. December is what, only three months away...
