I was thinking of doing a relocation of the stock lever myself instead of the hydro route. I got my stock button drilled so I can binding wire it down when driving and take it out if I ever need to have it lock.

Right now, I sit too close where I can't even pull the hand brake in a comfortable way. I actually have the co-driver hold it if I'm starting a stage on an uphill. It's pretty ghetto.

Just need to get a setup like the WRC guys do. Where it disengages the center diff and makes the car FWD everytime you hit the hand brake. Not that it will cost you a pretty penny. smiling smiley

All Evo's from 2005+ with the ACD diff and STI's with the plated diff do that from factory. I'm not sure on the STI's with the helical diff. Easy to research though.

On a FWD you can LFB while staing on the accelerator to lock up the rear wheels and getting the same result, it just doesnt have the bling factor.

Not sure about the current STIs. They change the damn center diff config on the STI so much I don't know what it is. I own a 2006 and from what I gathered, it's got a mechanical diff so there's no way to disengage the front or rear. My buddy with a 2004 said if you put the e-brake up one click so the light is on, his car turns to rear wheel drive.

/shrug? I don't feel like searching the internet to find out.

But yes on the LFB on FWD car.

I don't have a hydraulic handbrake in my car. I think I've wished I had one exactly once (on whatever that stage is that's across the street from the OHV park in Elma, WA). Generally, if the road's wide enough you can get the tail wagging and just snap it around at the appropriate spot.

Having more tools in your "oh shit" toolbox is good, but there're about 50 other tweaks I'd make to a Golf (and my driving) before mucking with the brake lines.

That being said, it's nice to have in the Evo, mostly because it opens the center diff. Also, I find it harder to get the tail wagging in an Evo. The durn thing's got too much grip.

And yeah, the way we did it was to cap off one of the two rear lines at the master and run the other to the proportioning valve, then to the handbrake, then to a T that went to each rear wheel.

Someone at the rallycross nationals last year blew up a WRX trans by grabbing handbrake.

Wasn't there, heard it second hand, don't know the full story, etc.

Transverse engine VW/Audi products disengage the rear axle as well. And they also slam the throttle shut for a few seconds. Oops.

i appreciate all the advice, i do lfb and i always wanted and good handbrake, at this point i really think i should have left it factory, but the factory valve IS junk. so i will finish it off the install, kind of discourged by having three types of fittings and two types of flairs, but it will be a learning experiance for sure. agin thanks for the insight.

The valve you have may be rusted or broken, but the factory valve is NOT junk...Way more range of adjustment than any of the aftermarket jammers for sure.
