FIA article 253: Required Gussets...
September 06, 2009 10:39AM
Hey,

What gussets are required?

All I found were the doorbar gussets. And, although I find the wording to be open ended, I am getting a pair of gussets installed on the a-pillar support bars.

Anything else?

Thanks!

8th piccie down, gusset in X... no no no.
Wrap around, or TACO style please.

Think about thin steel on centerline like that, it hurts more than it helps.
Would you make a splint for a broken arm out ot thing steel on edge in the inside of the crook of your elbow?

Easy way to clarify the problem is to shear a 5" triangle, place it in the crook of the elbow in the nice soft tender flesh and have HIM hold it there by flexing the arm then ask "You ready for me to pull like all I'm worth on your fist to see if I can close the L?"

Then, while you're bandaging him up, ask if he wants you to use nothing but cardboard and duct tape to immobilize the elbow by sandwiching the arm tween 2 pieces on each side and tape.

What sanctioning body are you going to log book with? Do you have a NASA or RA rule book? Those gussets have got to be cut out. Also the door bar X sucks. You need to wrap the intersection of the two tubes. How much tube do you have in that cage?

8.3.2.1.5 Reinforcement of bends and junctions :
The junctions between:
- the diagonal members of the main rollbar,
- the roof reinforcements (configuration of Drawing 253-12 and
only for cars homologated as from 01/01/2007),
-the doorbars (configuration of Drawing 253-9),
- the doorbars and the windscreen pillar reinforcement (Drawing
253-15),
must be reinforced by a minimum of 2 gussets complying with
article 253-8.2.14.
If the doorbars and the windscreen pillar reinforcement are not
situated in the same plane, the reinforcement may be made of
fabricated sheet metal, provided it complies with dimensions in
Article 253-8.2.14.

Someone was kind enough to point out what was starring me in the face. I read that twice last night and it did not sink in...

John, I do agree with you on the X gussets sucking... but they're not really thin... Those gussets are thicker then the tubing...

But yeah, tacos are the way to go

I see no gussets.
But you need to gusset the door X, A-pillar through door bar, main hoop X, and roof X. FIA requires all taco gussets. Two per X.

I DISAGREE with your DISAGREES. If you are going to do the door bar X's like that without any of the bars in tension and just a minimal contact area between the two V's at the bends then you need to fully weld a complete wrap around gusset (preferably equal wall thickness as the tubing) at the (non)intersection of the X. If you slide sideways into a tree in the door area that small weld holding the two V's together could easily fail and the bars would swing right in towards the occupants. Which is not really the intended function of doorbars.

Dave, you and I agree!

It will have a frull wrap around (heavy guage) gusset almost 4 tubing widths from the intersection.

EDIT: I do know that you prefer the traditional 'x' with the one bar in tension. I'd have used that design if I didn't have the sil bar. I think each design has it's own pro and cons, and I feel most comfortable with this setup.

Daniel,

Dave said the same thing that I did in regards to the door X intersection.
