Ball joints
September 24, 2009 05:00PM
I need to replace my lower ball joints, and I'm wondering what kind of brand I should go with. I was thinking NAPA premium, (don't I usually say that?) but I'm curious what brands you folks prefer.

I usually abstain from Autozone though; seems like much of their parts are crap.

I have had good luck with the napa brand ball joints on my focus. I like them because once you grind off all the rivets and switch to the bolts that come with the napa parts it makes it easier to change them out in service.

Now we just need to convince the parts suppliers to create bolt in ones that fit the '05+ knuckles with the larger ball joints.

Maybe with Moog rather than NAPA you wouldn't have to change them in service ???

I don't know who makes NAPA bjs , could easily be MOOG.

Well when you hit a rock hard enough to put a softball sized blister in the sidewall of the tire, bend the rim and bend the strut, a little slop in the ball joint isn't too bad.

I bought the Moog ones, but realized that I bought ones with grease zerks on the bottom. Is that a problem? Grounds to return them, or just roll with it?

You should be able to get the little plugs that can be threaded in instead of the zerks. May have to find some at a front end shop laying around.

Why cover it with silicone/blank it? Just to keep dirt out? Or is the removing it so it doesnt get smashed in addition to keeping dirt out?

The problem lies with the zerk getting broken off from impact. Not the end of the worlf but a minor nuisance.
