Fire extinguisher mounting
September 29, 2009 07:56AM
I was thinking I'd mount them on the floor in front of both the driver's and co-driver's seat. Like this:

The plan is to weld a plate to the floor that's larger than the mounting bracket that came with the fire extinguishers and then bolt the bracket to the plate.

- Any idea if the bracket will hold tight in a hard impact?
- How is you extinguisher mounted?
- Any thoughts and/or concerns?

Thanks!

Scrutineers won't like them on the floor on the driver's side.

Something about coming loose and jamming in the pedals, IIRC...

I'm not set on having the second one in front of the driver's seat. I'm hesitant to place it in the rear seat area though, I'd have to reach through cage tubes to get it.

For those of you who have used your fire extinguishers... what about mounting the second one in the trunk? Too far away? Better because an open door blocks more of the road than an open trunk?

90% of the time you will use your extinguisher on someone else's car. I think it would be wise to have one in the car (by the co-driver's feet) in case you need one on stage and the other one in the trunk in case you need it for someone else.

Also, having one in the trunk might be usefull if a spectator need to access it to put out a fire after you had an accident. Trunk might be easier to open than a door, and if the door is easier, well there's one right by the co-driver.

A friends car that caught on fire was able to be put out thanks to my driver having an extinguisher at his feet. He saw the flames as the car pulled up behind us in the mirror while I was messing around with putting away notes, etc. The car had little to no damage thanks to the fast response and was able to keep racing.
Mine are in the trunk and at codriver's feet in my car though. I've accidently set off an extinguisher in a car I was codriving in, but that was because the hill climb association requires you to have your extinguisher pin pulled during the races, and the pin had been lost in that car.

I've never heard you can't have one at the driver's feet, that's where I'd planned to put it. A welded plate should be fine Dan, I'm just through-bolting to a big backing plate on the underside with mine though.

If there's any chance of it coming loose and going under the pedals, then it isn't secured well enough IMO.

Now, if only my extinguishers weren't hanging on a wall in Canada Customs in Vancouver...

I use the mounts that Streetwise Parts sells. Solid, easy to use and the extinguisher never comes loose.

Thanks

My first car failed an RA tech back in 2005 because the ext was in front of the drivers seat. I had to source a drill and some hardware, pull down the underbody, and relocate it before they would let me run. I wouldn't do it....

Went with this on the co-driver's side:

And, I'm thinking of mounting another one to the cage behind my seat. Someone suggested using hose clamps to attach the bracket to the cage. I'm on the fence - want to help push me in one direction?

Dan, for you, hose clamps would be simple and effective as you can get at it easy through the rear door. I'm trying to decide where to put mine, because I don't have the rear doors to go through and I don't want it as far away as the trunk. My HAM radio is going to be on the main-hoop bottom bar, between the seats, so I can't do it there and there isn't anywhere else convenient that it could be reached from the front.

Anyway, for you, yeah, I say on the door-bar extension right in the middle of the rear door opening.

Chis, muchachito mio, maybe AFTER we make comments on the welding one could be a little more precise, sumpin on the lines of

Who Dooooood, overkill much?
Manz youse gotta have a sponsorship from a mig wire supply house!

No! No! I gots it!! You trying to add ballast!

In other words, a few 1/2 beads---and that's a lot---will stick that more than enough, nothing gained except weight by doing continuous welds.

Way overkill on the bracket...I just bolt them thru the floor.

Back East I have heard of cars having to move a floor mounted driver's side fire bottle to get thru tech. Fear of comming loose and interfering with the pedals....must have been a slow day at tech.

Fire extinguisher concerns...I have seen studies (years ago) that show that people will not readily go back past a fire to get to an extinguisher. So on the floor behind the seats may not be the best place. Behind the seat clamped to the main hoop or somewhere you can reach with out getting in the car should be good.

Screw it, mount them outside the car on the b or c pillar. Make some cardboard to make it look all cool like and RS200 inlet duct or something.
