JVAB Suspension Results
September 29, 2009 10:38PM
Not a ton of rough stages to really tell the tale, but I was supremely impressed by John's stuff.

We had a bit of drama at the rally, killed a front motor mount on day two and subsequently killed the fan on stg 2 of the second day, so I swapped some spots not wanting to hold up the field while we transited the roughest stage of the event....turns out we ran the stage fairly quickly, in fact we ran faster than the last third of the field...at what I thought was a fairly low speed.

So we get the car fixed and run it at full speed, our top G2 competition was on a near stock suspension and we took him by 40 seconds...

He lost at least 10 seconds due to a flat near the end of the stage, but still, 30 seconds over 7 miles...best investment I have made on this car by far.

although....john, we gotta talk, I did a bit of damage, so we need to figure out a way to beef up those top mounts because of those long shanks, and get a spare for service:

Well congratulations, was hoping you'd get a chance toi see them in hard use but good to know they work on smooooooth and FAST.

Right, tubes are done, been waiting for some more bottoms to weld in for your No3.

Robert is of course champing at the bit to get your spare No5 and No6 which are here.
(He wants to pick up the gearbox sometime, too)
You call him and-or me and say a time.

Hey Tom let's here the rest of the gory details. You had some heat issues? How did the fueling go with box on top of the cell?

Heat issues....yeah you could say that...the exhaust was hot, and I mean like 200 degree underhood temps hot (glad I mad the shroud for the intake). The header actually melted the lower portion of the shifter pivot point, twice, until we made a header skid plate into a head shield (gulp, yeah, I know).

Fueling: the heat from the sun, melted our cheapo summit racing refueling jug tops, so we didn't have a way to fuel the car. In all reality it wasn't too rough as we were able to use a local service station for gas. When we swap back to our normal fueling procedure, we'll need to make a bit longer refueling tube, but I don't see too much trouble.

Thanks Robert!

Thanks Timm, looking forward to some pictures!

Oh and by the way we were 6th overall on day one, 4th overall on day two, and first in 2wd on both days....took us a while to get used to the car and get past most of the issues...although, now I am considering options due to the breather drama and continuous transmission issues we are encountering.

Hey I got nothing against any car a priori.

Remember I've only rallied a SAAB, yet I make things for Volvos!!!!
And Opels, Datsuns, Mitsubishis, Subarus, Mazdas, Toyotas, BMW, what else?

Nice job Don & Tom good to see someone else showing off how well the JVAB stuff works.

We melted our shift linkage at our first real rally (Cherokee Trails 2005) in the golf too. Moved the cat to the back and replaced the stuff up front with teflon or delrin wherever possible. USRT www.usrallyteam.com has a bunch of bits for this as do some other places.

What do you think of the Golf VS the old Rabbit? Handling, stabililty, speed, ease of driving, etc etc etc....

I've heard you've been known to dabble with Fords occasionally, too.

I melted my shift ball once. Moved the cat to the back and put a heat shield under the shifter.

Good to hear nothing too major though!

Funny thing is, how many of the 'yutes of today even remember what a Datsun is?

I've been very happy with the front struts JVL made for me. Super smooth over the big bumps that would normally try to push my struts through the hood! Although I could use some reinforcing plates... Any word John?

It's kinda funny. You can say a a 'yout' "Datsun 510!!!" and there'll be some sort of vague positive mumbling often enough.

But no idea what makes a 510 a 510.

Can't imagine what it's like trying to splain to a yout what an Oldpile is.

Course quite a lotta youts are probably wonder what da fawk youse and is are talking about wit dis yout thing, too.

Old, ugly, squarish boxy little car with IRS, RWD, lightweight, Humongous engine bay....

that pretty much does it.
