Well the answer to straight cut gears is.. it wouldn't bother me, but it would likely bother my wife. And since the running joke is once the NSU is on the road it will be the only mode of conveyance to the inlaws.. that might matter winking smiley

I was thinking slightly different than you.. why can't I take a regular suitable helical gear box that has the rough package dimensions I need and strip it.. reverse engineer all the bearing surfaces and then figure out where they need to go and how the power gets from the engine to the box to the differential.. then get something CNCed.

Certainly not rocket science.. and this way I could make it with the required mounts in the right locations and not end up with something scabed to something and so on.

Sort of pick the right engine considering size, weight, power, layout and availability/cost.. and then build the gears around it.

That would give me quiet gears, a reverse, and the right package in the right place.
