How would you do it? - Steel Fender Flares
October 26, 2009 04:55PM
Ok.. so I'm starting to think through what I actually have to do on the car this winter..

One of the big things, is installing fabulously huge steel flares.

A) I've never done this
cool smiley I've certainly never done it on a structural fendered car.

I will attach some photos...

My thinking has always been.. cut back the original wheel well to the flat horizontal part, cut the fender out to accept the flare... trim the backside of the flare to match the contour of the fender.. tack weld.. make sure the fit is right, lay a couple stitches.. then extend the inner wheel well to the flare.

To recap.. wheel well is attached to flare which is attached the fender..

I suppose the other ways to do this would be to cut the wheel wells and make perfectly horizontal to the fender (no roll in). Cur the flare to match the contour of the fender weld on to the fender. *** will look like crap up close?

With a slight variation of close the void after by extending the wheel well to the flare after you have done the above. *** likely strongest.. if I drill some big massive holes in the fender after then that cavity can vent....

Any thoughts?

Allright... I'll bite.

~~~nooB WARNING!~~~
Where the fuck are these scans?
I have searched - twice. I have yet to find anything more than a link to another link to a folder hosting 20 pages of said Ford perparation manual. Since then I have heard two references made to this manual that refer to topics and details I did not see int the 20 pages I was able to find.
Where are they?
Thanks
Check there. They've been there for over a year now as well. So is the Mazda RX7 one.
Hand made in switzerland is the story, I do konw they're definitely hand made.
If it were at all financially feasable, I would get a bunch punched.
You could make a mold to do fiberglass copies pretty inexpensively -- though I don't imagine the market for NSU TT parts is strong enough to support much demand in North America...
They look like they came from spun blanks. I have spun parts made all the time and I can set you up with one for the companies that does it if you want. It's still going to be $1000 for a hardwood tool but miles less than a $15K stamping die.
Grant:
I've got the Vauxhall Sportpart Manual (Chevette) and VW Group A (A2) 16V GTI build manuals if you want to host them.
