Ok, so,
I saw this: http://thekneeslider.com/archives/2007/07/31/sesco-air-and-oil-cooled-suzuki-v8-engines/#comments And thought that's neet.. then I started looking at the NSU some more and measuring.. Oy, yes it would require a fair amount of machining.. but a longitudinal NSU 2-2.6 litre V8... is very very doable... Andrew M Onterrible 30ish |

Good point.. maybe it's because I find the large threads frustrating in general. At any rate I should dial back the speculatory bench wanking. Cheers. Andrew M Onterrible 30ish |

I've already sent an email off to my machinist friend. Hopefully I can get a bottom end machined and the crank & rods modified for something less than mega bucks. I also found out that the NSU motor is a wrong turn motor, so that also opens up options for transaxles mounted underneath the block and driven with a gear, if the stock transaxle can't be made to work for some reason. Is the whole point to fuck with the car? WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH THE STOCK MOTOR? Have you checked availability of stuff? Have you measured piston and valves for their critical dims in case you neeed to avail yourself of the crossreferencing abilities of the Intrawebz? I wanna know what motor parts cost. See it wouldn't look all whacky/wanky if you ALSO posted prices of parts and we could all go YIKES!!!!! and then have some idea WHY? WHY!!!??? WHY!!!!!????? all the wankiness. John, Everything you could possibly want is available as far as I can tell. This is probably one of the most comprehensive one stop NSU race fully internetized shops http://www.saelzer-motorsport.de/ Here is the English language catalogue: http://www.saelzer-motorsport.de/saelzer%20motorsport,%20May%202009%20GB.pdf As I mentioned before.. I want to explore options.. I'm now at: Making a 2-2.4L Flat Plane Air Cooled V8 using stock NSU cylinders, pistons, heads, camshafts.. I don't know yet if I could manage to modify a stock crank, but the only difference between the right crank and the stock crank is less counter balance and room for 2 rods at each location. Stock cams are fine, I just need to take the second firing bank and retard it 90 deg. Stock timing is fine, the distributer(s) run off the camshaft. I'm only shooting for 100ish HP, so stock everything that doesn't have to change is fine. Now I'd like to run it north south.. so I don't know if I can make the original transaxle work.. but, because the NSU motor is counterclockwise/anticlockwise/wrong turn I can take any normal transaxle for a mid mounted engine.. and mount it underneath the block and drive it with 2 gears, so the transaxle will turn the right way. When it's all said and done.. I end up with a cool sounding air cooled motor that's still a "NSU" motor (I can't speak for any rule book thumpers). It will sound really cool, have torque, will rev high, look cool, the weight distribution certainly won't be worse. And if I can get the required machinging done for a reasonable cost, I bet it won't cost more than building a high strung NSU 4 banger. Andrew M Onterrible 30ish |

Jon ![]() ![]() Mainly, I want a fun project.. not just something to drive.. and I value this forums opinions and wise ass remarks ![]() Seriously though, the V8 NSU based motor is probably the best option thus far.. it's really not that bad. As Autounion/Audi took over NSU later, why not throw an Audi V8 into it and add a front rad and be done?... Would not that qualify as having an engine from the same manufacturer? Or if your after only 100hp, just work the stock engine? Hillman Imp 998cc are getting 125hp in race form. |

Well to fully disclose.. I'm looking for some "problem to solve" which is what is driving JVL and others nuts. It is however, what I wanted.. something neet and a problem to solve. I know race NSU motors are in the 125 neck of the woods.. I first want to get the car on the road with my problem solved <grin ![]() Andrew M Onterrible 30ish |

Are you offering the same kind of old school long skirted pistons that don't like to show their legs.. Or the high wrist pined leggy kind that likes to hang around head ![]() At any rate, not getting pistons for a bit regardless. Since you asked ![]() So, far the biggest thing I overlooked last night that's come to mind is that the heads are directionally nesting, with one end having a larger bearing diameter and the opposite a flange. That and the camshaft.. Andrew M Onterrible 30ish |
