2001 Hyundai Accent with '03 Elantra
November 22, 2009 11:10PM
i was bored and wanted a winter project.

just bought off craigslist a 2001 Hyundai Accent 2door hatch with a blown auto transmission, and a 2003 Hyundai Elantra 4door with a 2.0L four banger 5speed. a gain of ~30HP and tourque, in a car that is 400# less weight. will retain OBD2 and 30mpg!!!

i plan on ripping out the motor, tranny, ECU, COMPLETE wiring harness (and i mean complete), shift linkage, bigger brakes, bigger sway bars, fuel pump, ect off the 2.0 Elantra and stuff them into a nice 2001 Accent hatchback with 94K Miles.

not rally related, move to off topic if need be you mods. i will link the build thread for pics and keep yous rally dudes informed on the progress.

elantra is in the garage as of noon today. wiring harness is off, just need to pull the axles to yank the motor/tranny tomorrow. Accent will be picked up on tuesday. $500 each for the cars. Elantra will bring $100 in scrap metal, and hopefully some more money for parts. 3 15" tires are almost brand new off the Elantra!

Wait..I thought we were all moderators here....

There really aren't any inappropriate posts when it comes to messing with cars and wrenches,,or wenches for that matter.

That should be a really fun car when done. The 1.6 Accent is pretty fun as is, but they sure need JVLs touch on the suspension.

Yeah. What they said!
What, you got a car and you're doing something interesting or challenging to it? Sweet!
Actually, this will be interesting to see, as I've often said that that model Accent should be the new Golf. There's an insane and fast local guy that has a FWD Eclipse that wanted to build his Accent. He loved the way the car handled and took a beating, even with the lack of power.

Now that I'm hooked on lemons racing, it sound like you are well on your way to a highly competitive setup.

IMHO swapping within a platform (like you are doing) gives by far the highest fun/performance per buck/hour.

And tricked-out Hyundais are cool no matter what.

wait, i just read thru the replies... no one is saying i'm a dumbass for wrenching on korean cars? sweet. ohh and that lemons race is awesome btw.

interesting fact: the late 90's Mitsubishi Eclipse Quaffe fits this tranny... =)

if it will accept it, i wil put the elantra suspension on it. the major pain in the ass is that the ECU is hooked to an immobilizer. the ignition key has a micochip in it. thus the need for a complete donor car to get the complete wiring harness...

as of tonight the engine+ trans are out. i have been labeling the wiring harness with masking tape for each thing i unplug. the dashboard is almost out of the car. i will take pics soon.

ohh and i forgot another interesting note, the same 2.0L motor is in the lowend Tucson. that beast is 3500 pounds. take the manual transmission out of that for CRAZY short gearbox and BIG final drive gear.

Hyundai is largely Mitsu inspired as Kia is Mazda/Ford inspired. They are really good cars and sold in adequate numbers to be good hotrod fodder at even better prices. I have AllData so if you need any wiring diagrams or whatever let me know.

ok dude. i'm sure at some point i will need some kind of wiring diagram. so far the only control module i found with a Mitsubishi emblem on it was the cruise control. and yes i am going to swap that in too! helps with the "no lift" and "flat over crest" notes...

Check out the Hyundaiperformance web site, they have a section for this. There used to be a site called hve.com in Aus. they carried swap kits for what you want to do. Got some rotors from DBA in Aus. they were better than most ones availible up here. Although only having only a Chiltons book(yuk!) it took 5 hours for the 1st side 45 mins on the other! The car was a 95 Accent, got stuck with after my step daughter got the car repo-ed.
