Re: 2001 Hyundai Accent with '03 Elantra

I now have a 2004 Elantra and they both have the quirk of not always getting fully into 2cd gear, when clutch is released it'll pop out. Never was able to determine if it was gear box or shifter. On the Accent shifter I moved the pivot point 1/2" replaced the plastic bushings with oilite bronze and the weenie plastic rod ends for the cables withe teflon lined rod ends. The fell was much improved but it would still pop out of gear at seemingly random times.

Pull that trans off and fix the throwout bearing, might be good idea.

They made it out of plastic and the input snout it rides on is aluminum. The aluminum corrodes, the plastic isn't beefy enough to clean it as it slides past, eventually it stays applied, overheats, melts, and everything comes apart.

The kicker - the snout dealy (name?) is part of the transmission casting, not a replacable part.

We've been seeing a lot of this happening, mainly on Accents, probably because those are the ones that get more manual transmissions. It's an odd import where the automatic is better than the manual!

added to my list. thanks dude. yeah, i'm installing a new timing belt and new pulleys and tensioner, and doing the coolant into the throttle body delete as well. i will have to take some more pictures tomorrow, the car is almost completely stripped. another 4 hours of work to rip off the suspension and it'll be done.

the 2001 accent was a shady deal. found on craigslist and the convinced a guy in Mass to sell his car for $600... this one is a 2003 model: 91,000 miles, 5 speed, A/C, recent timing belt, alternator, plugs, wires, 4 snow tires!!! picking it up on sunday.

Basically they are like any lowline Asian car, lots of room for improvement. Stock the tires are too small and supension too wobbly, The bigger cars handle better. None have a sport suspension from the factory but it is a basic strut and I'm sure it can be easily improved.

I've seen pics of a, same gen as yours, Accent with a 4wd/4G63 conversion, for a budget mini-Evo, minus 1000 lbs or so.

I imagine it would go like a rocket.

Oh, thats kind of sad. They're really cheap and newer then my corolla, and look halfway decent, I think. They're (were?) on the list of potential next cars for me, haha

They're great budget cars. I recommend then to most of my customers. You however should maybe look more at a Toyota Echo...
