remote oil filter mount with thermostat?
November 29, 2009 02:57AM
I'm relocating my oil filter, which means the sandwich plate with the built-in thermostat is not in the system any more. I've found stand-alone oil thermostats, but I'd much rather use one that's built in to the remote filter mount. Fewer fittings, fewer things to mount, less money, and less to go wrong.

I can't find a filter mount with a thermostat in it, though. Where should I be looking?

Or you could use one of these http://www.racerpartswholesale.com/product/1600/Mocal_Sandwich_Plate
on a regular remote filter mount.

Come on Dave, whatsa matter is your Google broken? winking smiley

Yeah it's a deal only $92.95

I have slightly used ones with US thread for Ford/Volvo filter from a bit less.
Like $70 less.

Apparently my Google is broken. The Greddy thing didn't show up, even after LOTS of searching.

Doesn't someone make one of those for 'murrikan cars? It would cost a lot less...

The Mocal and Volvo ones won't work. I just took that same Mocal part off the car, in fact. Sandwich plate is no help with a remote filter mount. Also, one of the main reasons I'm going remote is so the oil lines can come out perpindicular to the oil filter mounting surface. Packaging is MUCH easier that way.

What's the car. I run mine without a thermostat. I have the two in, two out remote filter mount. Oil temp sender on the from block side, oil feed to turbo and to oil cooler off other side. Running into a Setrab cooler and just not running a thermostat and just super patient about letting it warm up.
Better solution would be to use something like the RX7 oil cooler that has the thermostat built into the oil cooler. I do have a remote thermostat, but that's just additional AN fittings and plumbing and one more thing to mount under the hood so I went without it.

Its for my Silvia street/track car (doing a head swap now, so I have access to the plumbing). The car already has an oil cooler, otherwise, RX-7 would be the right solution.

Since it does mixed street/track duty, the thermostat's pretty important. Oil runs pretty cool on the street.

What's the purpose/routing of those 2-in, 2-out filter mounts? I don't get them...

Easy spot to mount a temp sender.
Straight out of filter to turbo for oil feed.

Oh, so you're adapting the extra outlets down for other purposes? Makes sense now. Still don't understand the original purpose for which they were made...

The more I look, the more I think the wildly overpriced GReddy part might be the right one. Besides being the only one I've seen so far with the thermostat in the right location, it already has -10 fittings to match my existing lines. All the pooshrod crap is 1/2 NPT.

Re: remote oil filter mount with thermostat?

anyone got a quick 'how to/parts list' to do this on a Subaru?

I've wanted to add an oiler cooler for a while now, and I like moving the oil filter out from underneath the car for 1) protection (just in case/act of god kind of stuff), and 2) easier to access since I change my filter after every event, but not all of the oil.

mounting the plate seems the most difficult in an already tight Suby engine bay...and I have no experience plumbing this kind of stuff, but doesn't seem too difficult.

Is it actually converted/imported as a silvia? or is it just the front end?

Just converted. What's the point of importing one? There's nothing special about them outside the engine bay.

I think on Steve's STI they bought a prebuilt kit, but replaced all the AN lines with ones that weren't so cheap and crappy.

Just went and looked under Mitch's hood. No oil cooler on his STI.

I don't understand why can't you use the Volvo plate to 'merican remote head. The treat is same and both take the same, most common, filter.

Wait. So are you saying use a remote filter mount, then put the Volvo sandwich plate on the remote filter mount?
