Is there some secondary reason why the factory oil/water cooler is no good (like the water lines cause problems or something) or do you just not like oil/water heat exchangers?

The only time I've ever measured back-to-back with and without an oil/water sandwich cooler, I was shocked how effective it was. It really does help. The oil SHOULD be warmer than the coolant, so there's no harm keeping it there. The fact that it warms the oil faster on startup is also beneficial.

i think the factory type thing works well in street applications, and keeps the temps at a constant level.

yet when racing, and temps are at there maximum, it doesn't do a good enough job, and these things really need an external cooler.

I completely agree, but why remove the OE part? Just run both. Then you don't need as big an external cooler.

Then you would need to cut a hole in the skidplate for the oil filter to stick down through. Probably not a good idea. With the GM V-6 oil filter I ended up using that would have been the case. The Subaru filter is a tiny little thing.

Exactly. I did the same as you but had to have 3! spacers machined before the fittings would clear the timing cover.

Geeeze Dave just weld on some reinforcment to the filter can. 3/16 would work.
