Sequential LED shift light
December 02, 2009 11:33PM
Hi - anyone know of a low budget sequential LED shif light?

I've seen several DIY plans, no kits - seems doable - but not extremely simple.

I'd expect that the R&D has already be done by someone no?

Thanks,

Vittorio -

stand alone ECU? just use on of the outputs to trigger at a certain RPM. done.

don't you need something like a CMOS chip that has a timer, some inbound/outbound ports, a low level OS, a counting application and some power management in order to do that?

I've got a standalone - that has a tach out...

it should have some other outputs left over. use one of the spare outputs to go on at a certain RPM, probably enough voltage to drive an LED. ifnot just make that output drive a relay. what ECU you got?

Put a foot switch (which controls the power to yer LED dashlight) on the codriver's floorboard and instruct your codriver to tap the footswitch instead of yelling "nex geah, she's bloody schriemmen fahr eht!" every time you hit 7,800rpm.
I know, it might not work with blonds. ;-)

Or google "MSD RPM ACTIVATED SWITCH", maybe.

it does have additional GPO's - I think I'm starting to see the light (sorry smiling smiley )...

What you're saying is that at a given RPM have a signal trigger from the other GPO's that goes to a light - duh, sound pretty simple and I think very doable and if so very inexpensive...

Let me dig into this a bit - sounds like it should work...

Grazie.

I'm trying to cut down on blonds in the right seat - I've narrowed my preferences to brunettes, potentially w/graying hair...

Blonds are for either pre or post rally :p

Thanks for the lead - on a quick look, looks like they only work for 4,6 or 8cyl applications - which means I just have to figure out the factor and set that as the RPM limit as my application has 5cyl (I knew I should have put a V8 in that puppy)...

I've always rather wanted a downshift light. Sometimes I'll be in like 3rd gear and kinda bogging, but just deal with it when I probably should be kicking into 2nd.

hmm - pricey...

I think I've located a device that is 1/2 the price of the gauge - that is a light bar and has several options for how the display will occur.

In the back of my mind I also wonder if it will be more of a distraction than a benefit - however, I hate having to take my eyes off the road to check my tach, especially when you're in one of the 'tween' situations where you'd really like to be in a different gear at the apex of the turn, but it wouldn't be the right gear at the entry...

Seems cheap - $50 and with a small digital tach built in

I'm looking into the ecliptech - has anyone had any experience with it?

Any opinions looking at the spec?

Just one chip, an LM2917.

Oh, and probably a FET or a relay to drive your shift light.

For Grant's downshift light, you'd also need a boxing glove on one of those scissor extensions.
