Subaru "boost tube"
December 15, 2009 08:07AM
So my question for the week.

What is the theory behind the Subaru "boost tube"

On a WRC car

On Pastrami/Block's Cars

Please discuss

Chris

Dear lord! I wonder what that is all about. Some type of accumulator system to work in conjunction with the anti lag?

Something like that, I think. I always thought it was to have a big reservoir of pressurized air ready to go when you open the throttle again.

I picked one up one time I was sneaking around VSC's shop and it was just empty inside, nothing fancy going on in there.

Extra volume of air after the restrictor to get pulled in off constant on/off throttle? That's all I could figure it's used for.

I don't think Subaru is unique with the post inter cooler reservoirs. I did a really quick search online and couldn't find anything but I am virtually certain I have seen similar things in other makes of cars.

My understanding has always been (these are far from being a new item) is that they are simply a reservoir to stabilize the delivery to the intake.

Steve Bis' STI. Located here in Colorado. Not sure what the theory is though.

I bet it drops the temp just a bit more than what exits the IC. I would not be surprised if you could achieve lower than ambient temps with a large chamber like that. Have you ever frozen your hand using a die grinder? not quite the same, but close.

Notice how they all dump into a large tube, then gradually neck down to accelerate the air?

I'm having the fuzzy recollection that it was a response to the banning of the check valved accumulator tanks that started showing up in the trunk. Now I can't remember if they banned the tanks or just the check valves that let them store boost without any anti-lag.

Vaguely recall they threatened to make the rule so small the tanks would be worthless.
Whatever.....

Could it be helping increase pressure? The boosted air comes out of the intercooler, suddenly the 30psi in a 3" tube expands into a 5" tube, and that would draw more air out? Or would it just lower the pressure in the 5" tube? Or would it in theory draw the air out, but then when it chokes back down, its negated?

Check valved accumulator...now that's an idea!

everyones ideas basically backed up my thinking....

Interesting that on Steves STi posted there they went to all the effort to mount and plumb that i/c....i can only imaging how much it heat soaks though...
