Fuel Pump Placement
January 14, 2010 08:40PM
Alright need some advice here - Worth the hassle to put it in a box in the back vs. putting it in the engine bay?

Here's the basics:

ABF 2.0l 16v engine
Dual sidedraft carbs
Fuel cell in the hatch like so. A aluminum cover will go over the cell. Lines will poke through the aluminum with seals.

Since I'm running carbs I've got a facet pump to get the gas to the carbs (only 4psi or so).

Now where to place it? Since it's a hatchback, if I put the pump in the back I'll need to put it in a box. Since I'm lazy I'm really tempted to just throw it up in the engine bay like the old days of mechanical pumps.

Any big cons to putting it up front? I know it is harder to pull then push and I run the risk of sucking air vs. leaking fluid - but really either is bad...

We use the dinky Facet pump on our 3-carb SAAB 96. It's mounted low on the inner fender where the stock Lucas electric pump was mounted. But, the line from our tank exits the bottom of the side of the tank, travels across the floor and through the lower firewall to the pump. There's no way to get air in the line unless we run out of gas.

I have heard you should mount the pump near the tank, but then in practice I have done it both ways with out fuel issues.
I would think the pump would work less hard if it received its fuel quicker rather than sucking all the way to the front.

I've always heard that electric fuel pumps push better than pull.

All pumps push better than the "suck". This is because pumps do not "suck". Atmospheric pressure pushes the liquid to the inlet of the pump. Atmospheric pressure cannot be more than 14.7 psi. It is always best to have the pump as close to and below the tank.

Scrounge around for an old metal first aid box to enclose your pump in. Easy and painless.
