You could weld a lump of steel inside the split open can of a domestic cat. It would retain more heat than the front sheetmetal and show up some degrees hotter.

You could just lobby and refuse to play stupid games.

Just put some wire mesh over your tailpipe and call it good! Sure looks like a grid to me...

They say they want to see at least a 1 degree differential front to back and they take that to mean its working...Whatever!

Are they asking to see you exhaust before it is installed or at the event?
Regardless, what is to prevent you from replacing the cat after it's been viewed? A special seal on the nuts of the cat.?
What about those cats (audi A6 and such) that need to have the engine pulled to replace/view them?
Painful.... Glad I have an old car..

Brian,

You are an idiot. Several Rally America scrutineers read this forum.

Why not just install a real cat and save yourself the trouble? There is no significant performance loss and you will be legal.

Do the right thing.

Wow. I took the OP's post as a real question as in "There is this rule change citing people faking a thing and I don't even get how you would do that?" not "Please tell me how to fake the temp rise to beat a now defunct rule."

Am I missing a back story or something?

If'n I was going to try to make the inlet read cooler than the outlet, I'd stick a piece of tubing (with a very close fit) in the inlet.

That's how slip-fit exhaust pipes seal, the inside pipe runs hotter than the outside pipe and expands until it seals, but when it's cold it can slip. So I'd be making the front half a kind of slip fit installation, so the outside pipe will show colder than the inside, and at the back there is no inside pipe to absorb the heat.

F. For all vehicles in all classes for all Performance Rally events, a
functional catalytic converter shall be installed. Functionality shall
be determined by the following: 1) a visible and complete grid within
the catalytic converter, or <REMOVED>. 2) a heat gain of 5% or greater from the
inlet to the outlet of the cat with the outlet being hotter. <REMOVED>

Rationale:
It is too easy to fake the heat difference check, so it is being eliminated.

OP is asking about the Rationale listed in the bulletin.

Rallymech: apologize NOW!!! no hurting internet feelings!!!! how darz yooo!?

So now the geniuses have decided I need a cat on a 1969 car with drooling carbs, a/f ratios all over so we know the cat is acomplish nothing.
Geniuses.

After wasting 10 minutes of my life waiting for the 40 mb rulebook to download...the original rule.

F. For all vehicles in all classes for all Performance Rally events, a
functional catalytic converter shall be installed. Functionality shall be
determined by the following: 1) A visible and complete grid within the
catalytic converter, or 2) a heat gain of 5% or greater from the inlet to the
outlet of the cat with the outlet being hotter.

The only exceptions that may be granted to the above rule, and then only
if documentary evidence is kept with the vehicle logbook, are:

1. For vehicles running the event powered by diesel fuel.
2. For vehicles that were imported into the USA prior to 1980, and that
did not have a similar model by that manufacturer that was sold in
76
the USA with a catalytic converter.
3. For U.S. vehicles sold prior to an EPA catalytic converter
requirement.

Since somebody closed the browser window on my computer with the rulebook while I stepped away for a few minutes,I can't tell for sure if the bulletin eliminates the exception clauses or not.

Never mind, Fiasco supplied the clarification I was looking for above. Older cars that were never equipped with cats don't need them.
