I've been to dyno's that will do sniffers and others that will only do pre-cat sensing. not really important. if I have to have it I'd like it to work. and because my car goes through state inspection; have to have a cat and muffler.

No need to cheat---the rule still doesn't say __where__ it has to be installed. If anything it makes it easier to bypass the spirit of the rule as now the only functionality check is that the grid is visible. Of course the grid is visible, the cat is conveniently _installed_ in the trunk of the car so the scrutineers can get to it easily without having to even place a knee on the ground.......

some peoples rally cars need to pass DEQ to be plated so they are rally legal.

seems like you could have a bit of a catch-22 with this rule. cat in the back meets RA rules, but doesn't pass DEQ. cat in the OEM spot passes DEQ but doesn't meet rally rules.

Cat in the OE location meets the rules, but just hard to inspect. If i put mine in the OE location, I would just weld an O2 bung right at the outlet with a cap so you could pull the cap and shine a light in. I think I will just put it at the back.

I would rather see the inspection hole at the front. Then if the strata was starting to melt I could see it.

Paint the front half of the cat a nice shiny white.

Paint the back half a nice matte black.

(And obviously make sure it's clean when it's checked.)

I forget the magnitude of this when I tested it on just a piece of exhaust pipe, but it was 3-8 degrees different, which I think met the rule at the time. (Used to be "any measurable" or some such"winking smiley I don't know that it would do "5%" if that's the rule for last year.

"But Anders!" you cry "Paint isn't an insulator! There's no way that could work!"

"Exactly." say Anders "And that's why your cheat-fu is so weak." winking smiley

I'm sure there's other ways too, like ceramic coating half of the inside (now that actually _could_ insulate).
