Heat Shielding
January 24, 2010 09:28PM
I'm looking for some stick on heat shielding like what Logic used on that WRC car he rebuilt, I need some to help reflect the exhaust heat away and in some other areas. What do you guys recommend?

Hope you don't mind me stealing your pic, Logic....

This is an example. It doesnt have to be EXACTLY that, but that style of shielding.

Both the mat (for inside, where the exhaust basically hits the bodyshell), and the tape for outside would be awesome. Is that just the normal 2in aluminized duct tape, or is that special?

I just used a spray on ceramic insulation on the inside cover of our LeMons car and it works well and is quite durable. We also exploded an engine on it and were able to just wipe it clean of oil with only some soapy water. The only downside I can see so far is that you have to buy their spray gun to shoot the stuff. It's literally like spraying soupy mud.

This is the retail version of their commercial coatings. You can buy it from all sorts of places on the internet. http://www.lizardskin.com/

There is also a cheap home made alternative...

i don't know what's on the tranny tunnel, but isn't that just aluminum tape?

That's what I have on my firewall around the turbo, and even taped to the corner of my top mount intercooler.

had a fire last month at a rallyX (of all placeS) when one of the p-steering lines burst and had a nice little engine bay fire. Tape stayed on fine, just wiped it down.

Its expensive, but I found a full roll online for like $50 somewhere.

Pegasus racing has the nice gold wrapping stuff that looks like the inside of the space shuttle.

Would it not be a better idea to shield the heat before it gets to the body of the car, ie on the outside rather then on the inside? Unless this is to keep the co-driver's body heat from warming up the gearbox and such?

Gold, Aluminum, silver etc are all good at transferring heat, so it needs some sort of insulator in there too, Kevlar under a hunk of sheet metal on the outside of the car would work well, or just glue Nomex to the underside of the tunnel.

here is some stuff...

Note again that the shiny side goes toward the heat not the other way around...

Oh, I completly agree. I'm just looking for that style. The shiny tape is reflective, but the mat I believe can go on either side. I'm MOSTLY interested in the reflective stuff, to go outside. (like you said, to reflect away heat )

Check out the intake heat shielding on the car Smokey built. Clearly, lovingly sewn by his sweet gramdma. You have to scroll down the thumb nails on right.

define 'fancy'?

this stuff:

I'd call $50 for 60 yards pretty fucking fancy.

That there is some miracle stuff..."thermally conductive" and "heat shielding" all in one. Initially sounds like a contradiction but I think they mean it carries the heat away..somewhere..

I've seen it used to shield bumper covers from exhaust heat. I'd think that on the inside of the floor the heat would collect under it and just loosen the adhesive??

This is the stuff we use on race cars. Fire walls, trans tunnels, etc. It's pretty spendy stuff.

Re: Heat Shielding

I have used some stuff I got at the motorcycle store on my street bike, the header I built is 1/4 inch from the plastic air box. 4 years and still works great. Pretty cheap, it was like $20, came in 2 1 foot square sheets, self adhesive backing.

I did the whole firewall and trans tunnel on my 76 Volvo with some cheap alluminum backed buytel (sp) stuff after i did the ford 2.3 turbo conversion, when towing our camper, it would cook my wife. after, it doesn't get much heating at all. that stuff has held up well, and it came in a 3 foot wide roll that was 10 feet long or something for $50. I used it on the outside.
