The 2.2L is a great starting engine. It's strong and it's reliable. I have this hair brained idea that I've been trying to convince Mark is a good idea that revolves around an Open Light Impreza on a 2.2L that you do the whole national series in, with no support vehicle whatsoever. You drive the car, rally ready, to and from the event. Any tools or spares are carried with you at all times.

Anyhow, back to topic, anyone know what the big difference is between the phase 1 and phase 2 2.2L engines are and if it's worth it. I know hp increase by like 10 in the phase 2.

On the 2.2's I've owned:

The '96 and earlier had an EGR valve. '97 and up was blocked off. Also, I've heard that '97 and up (other than the OBS 2.2's) were interferance engines, can't confirm the last one though.

No idea when the Phase 1/Phase 2 switch hapened.

The earlier 2.2 came with and without EGR. They are usually around $800 from the crate motor people. I change out 2 or 3 every year, lots of old Subes around here. There is a running core out back right now with blown head gaskets. It was about the same to replace it as repair it.

Make sure the piston slap isn't the crank pulley rattling around. Lots of these have that happen. Someone does a belt, doesn't get the pulley tight enough and it wears the crank keyway. Sometimes it ruins the crank, other times just the pulley.
