Rust Prevention: What would you do?
February 09, 2010 09:13AM
So what would you do here to prevent rust?

Specimen A
- My cage has a "X" that passes through the firewall and the rain tray. Accessing this area is difficult to say the least.

Specimen B
- I repaired the rear quarter panel rust by welding in a patch (first sheet welding project for me). Part of the area is hard to get at, but I can reach about 75% of the metal easily.

Specimen C
- There is rust underneath this support (which is located at the base of the C-pillar. I've got a patch welded on on the other (accessible) side. I' don't think I can reach this area, certainly not with any dexterity. I got this picture by shoving my camera between the trunk wall and the rear quarter panel.

Here's the patch from the other side (top of the picture).

As always, thanks for you assistance!

I'm thinking there are three possible ways to deal with it:

1 - do my best to clean it and paint it

2 - spray some oil product on it and forget about it

3 - use a POR-15 or Rust Encapsulator type product right on it

Anything or nothing would be fine.

What would you do if it were your car?

Well I sure wouldn't have spent all that time seam welding it. Haha. Just kidding.
On my car, I hit it with a wire wheel if I can, then paint it. I can't see the pics and you probably live in a more rust prone area than I do though.

por 15 brushed on will go over fairly messy shit if all the loose stuff is more or less knocked off.

the nice part is, there's virtually no loose stuff. this was all 'repaired' with fresh steel right before going in for it's cage, or added as part of the cage.

Look around your garage and find the nearest can of spray paint and give it a quick coat as well as you can reach in there. Other than that don't worry about it. You'll roll your car into a little ball long before a significant amount of rust forms.

You know what would be cool. Smoke bombs that painted. That way you could just seal the bitch up, light the smoke bomb, and run. As long as it didn't smell like a smoke bomb anyhow.

I would spray paint at what can be seen easily and ingnore the rest. As mentioned by that brute Dave the original, you'll likely ball it up years before that rust ever becomes an issue.

Zinc primer coating then rust prevention paint such as KBS coating or POR-15 or ?

If the car doesn't get balled up right away you might want to keep it around for a while and rust prevention is a way to help see to it! Both products can be brushed or sprayed, spraying gets places when a brush cannot ... If you're lacking spray equipment this kind of fix could be dealt with using a Pre-Val sprayer, less then $20 ...

These products go a long way, watch the video at KBS or youtube

As always IMHO
