Looks like Grant just inadvertently called a Neon part cool.

I wonder how that sits with him winking smiley

Actually, I said Golf and Neon both referred to as cool. Hell is melting already.
Dude, you could stick just about anything in the rear of a golf and I'd probably call it cooler than what's stock back there. smiling smiley

I had no idea that any other car used the same wacky rear suspension design as is on the Honda Fit...

Ford Festiva/Aspire use the same damn design.

A little bit of poking around seems to indicate the Fiesta has had this sort of setup for a while.

Could be interesting to see what they're doing in the S1600 or S2000 versions.... I can't imagine either of those are running a beam axle in the back.

The Honda Fit is a MkII Golf with ugly headlights.

Can't really argue with that. Could care less about looks, but snow accumulates on them something fierce.

Does that (your comparison, not the snow-on-headlights bit) mean that, in 20 years, I will own one of the most popular fwd rally platforms?

Probably not.

The twist beam is just an incredibly popular rear suspension, I think every major manufacturer has used it at one point or another. I am surprised it took Honda and Toyota this long to realize that the rear suspension is not that critical in a light front-drive car and they don't need to do all of that expensive, space-wasting monkey motion hijinks.

Pete, the only reason that Honda and Toyota stepped down to this type of rear suspension was to reduce costs and compete with other OEMs price wise. One other benefit of the twist beam rear suspension design is that it takes less space and so trunk volume is usually better with this suspension.

With my old 92 SE-R I never bent anything in the rear suspension in some very rough CRS events. A very fast competitor of mine in a well built Golf would go through about one beam per event. The SE-R was similar to an Impreza in the rear suspension.
