Having driven a golf in anger for a few years, seams the twist beam was not a problem. Not once did I think, wow I could go faster if I had a IRS in here. Sure intellectually we know a IRS should be better but how much better?

Really what would IRS gain me, a tinny big more grip in the back of the car? Most of the time I was doing things to try and get the rear to brake loose... I only spun the car twice in all the years I drove it, both before installing power steering.

Derek,

Didn't you suggest that the failure of the rear beam was a major contribution to the death of your golf?

I swapped for strength and carrying fewer spare parts - not for "better handling", but who know why they did it

I'm pretty sure his failure to negotiate the corner at a speed not defying the laws of physics was a major contribution to the death of his Golf.

True I think bending the rear beam may have help kill the car but there is a fix for that as the VW Motorsports cars showed, I was too lazy to do that fairly easy fix, mainly because it required removing the stock fuel tank.

Less spares is a decent reason, getting larger brakes by using the front knuckles may also be a good reason...

I do not think trying to get better handling is a proven reason however. Hell if you have done it what do you think about how the car drives now?

Well if you cound sitting in the driver's seat making engine noises counts as driving it does quite well smiling smiley

The car hasn't been quite put back together yet so I have no idea how it drives. But since I didn't modify any of the stock mounting, if it sucks I'll put the beam back in and forget about it
