7lbs that high up gives the road race guys wet dreams...

I've been in the room when this has been discussed by guys who weigh their cars by the ounce. But, they've spend 10's of thousands elsewhere to remove all the rest of the weight...

When you have pushed every other rule and dollar as far as you can...
When you have developed robot like consistancy...
When you can control the weather...
When you can control tire wear...
When you spend 20 hrs a week in a gym...
When you don't have a 250 lb co-driver...

When you haven't done all of the above worrying about 7 lb or even 70 lbs is really just mental masturbation for the average racer.

But carbon fiber panels do look awfully nifty until the UV rays get to them.

Holy shit! I just removed the hood from my gc project and even though I'd done it before I didn't remember what a utter PITA it was. I started with a spot weld drill bit but soon realized the heat from the spot wels had penetrated well beyond the edges of the little tiny dots so ended up using a step drill bit, making ginormous holes the size of nickels in a bazzillion places. Unless you're a body shop with some tricks I don't know, this is full on race car stuff ONLY!

I just use a regular drill bit (a sharp one!) that's just a bit larger diameter than the spot weld. Maybe about 1/4" or so. I just drill through the first layer (the part you are removing) and do not dill all the way through the second layer. You end up making a little divot in the second layer but do not drill all the way through. You need something to weld the new spot weld to when you put on the new roof skin. Those fancy spot weld drill bits don't work very well in my experience.

Spot welds... Hood... huh?

You need to have a drill that goes really, really slow. I use those spot weld cutters all the time, thin metal and thick. I use "Goop" penetration oil as a lubricant (you get in in a spray can at CrapyT). I've never seen the metal change colour.

You need a good drill that can go slow (or a cheap drill you can kill the brushes on) before you try to do tho bobbins on your shell. You'll destroy the metal and the hole saw if your drill is going fast. I bought a cheap 1/2 drill from CrapyTire and just pulsed the triger. But, it started to smoke every 5-10 minutes and it took me about 15 minutes to drill each hole for the bobbins. 25 minutes each for the rear subframe - lots of layers in those rear frame rails...

I've got the blue point spot weld cutters, they've been great. But it does get tiring having to grind the spot weld dimples (left by the cutter) before re-welding things back in place.

That's a nice piece. Too bad it's not legal for rally, though.

Maybe they should read the rule book. Or maybe they are just knowingly disregarding it...
