T5 Identity
March 10, 2010 06:36AM
Hey John

Should the ID# be stamped on a tag? Or cast into the case somewhere?

Picked up a T5 on CL, supposed to be from a 86 302 mustang, so '265' is what I'm looking for but, no dice so far.

Thanks, Ted

It's on a metal tag that connects the tail shaft to the main housing. If the trans has been rebuilt it could easily disappear.

JVL is having his knee replaced and will be in the hospital for a few days. The beatings will continue when he returns.

Ach...

Sorry to hear that John, the big white "Rush Skittles" (vicodin) are OK, but the little blue ones (time-release morphine) are where it's at. And get one of the icepacks with the picnic cooler full of ice-water attached, they work great and look horrible so you get lots of sympathy.

Keep the faith and feel better soon, don't chase the rehab girls around too much, they get ornery when you harass them.

As I recall the rehab goes pretty quick once the pain starts to subside, I did an ACL a coupla years ago and the full replacement folks seemed to be in and out quicker than I was -- they hurt more at the beginning though.

Thanks Grant, I'll check for the tag on the tailshaft, I suspect 24 years behind a V8 might have precipitated a rebuild or two.

Cheers, Ted

Looks like 1352-065 tag is pretty rusty but I don't think I'd mistake a 2 and a 0, not on this list but another cross reference pegs it as a non-WC box from an 84 mustang with a 2.95 1st gear. I'll pop off the bell tomorrow to check out the bearing race and confirm WC or non-WC.

Cheers, Ted

While you have it out, replace the bearing carrier with the aftermarket steel one! I destroyed the aluminum one in one race.

Yeah, once I positively ID it I'll purchase a rebuild kit and start discussing the merits of whether it's worth swapping to the tighter 5th, at this point I doubt it since my 4/5 shift is at about 130mph, and frankly, that's pretty much "fast enough" and with the .63 5th I can cruise at 75 at about 2500rpm.

I hadn't heard about steel bearing carrier but that sounds like a sensible upgrade, though you're pushing a ton more power than me. I'm looking at 170 hp/145 ft/lb.

Cheers, Ted

It's cheap and well worth it, even with less power. My car probably isn't a whole lot more. Stock is 175 hp and I've not done anything huge at this point. Exhaust and intercooler and running 4 psi less than stock boost.

Hey Grant, is this the piece? The one the T/O bearing rides on?

Pulled the bell off, definitely a non-WC T5, still got the all aluminum front bearing retainer as well, so I know which rebuild kit to order and that I have to get the new retainer.

Found a PDF Manual http://www.fordmuscle.com/archives/2002/09/transmissions/LD05-0510-0199.pdf, will this do? Or should I pop for a decent book?

Cheers, Ted

That looks like the same one I used and it was sufficient.
On the retainer, I used the aluminum one for like a single day of testing and a rallycross. It wasn't totally destroyed, but it already showed signs of getting beat on. Also, while you have it apart, have the input shaft machined down to the right diameter for your input shaft bearing on the crank. Brass bushing did completely fail on mine.

I have to figure out the whole pilot bearing/bushing thing. I'm sticking this onto a Zetec, apparently the crank is machined for a pilot but doesn't have one fitted.

Lot's of options, bushings, roller bearings, kevlar reinforced plastic doo-dads -- Bearing is the way to go?

Lotus 7 clone, bunch of xrattie parts, some tinfoil and string for the most part smiling smiley

No rally hopes, bit of hooning, perhaps a hillclimb or two.
