Apparently for little euro subcompacts, theory is reduced part count makes up for the material cost.

ZF & BMW collaborating so perhaps it's for the new Zero series...

Hmm. Interesting theory, depending on low the production takes, it would also take out the time for manufacturing all the parts it replaces, and being lighter, it should improve fuel economy.

BMW (or a supplier) is building a plant in Mosses Lake, WA to produce carbon parts for the upcoming 2013 electric model. They picked Mosses Lake as it has low cost electricity, likely to be used for autoclaves.

In the rust belt we will be saying "Wow check it out this part is still here on an 8 year old car and I can actually remove it from the vehicle without melting it first!"

More likely the cheap power for cooking the filament at 2500-3000deg C until it carbonizes.

It does raise an interesting point for the EU plastic recycling rules. I'm not sure if cars are covered but most products must be made in a way that it is easy to recover the different types of plastics for recycling, no chlorine on them, etc. They're going to have a fun time getting a recyclable thermoplastic to work in that application.

Really cool idea though. They can in-mold all the metal inserts and get complete parts in seconds.
