Glad to hear you've got the important part planned out. smiling smiley

Nobody wants to see a plain white car run in circles...besides, its only taking up time to coordinate a meet-up, I won't actually be doing any of it.

Hope to knock out sunroof and rear diff mounts tonight. Sounds like with some luck the diff will ship tomorrow AM, but unsure if we'll be able to get it to Denver by Friday without crazy expensive shipping. smiling smiley

I put the new Bearing and seals in his hands today, he is staying late tonight to assemble. It should be in my hands on my way to work in the morning.

If I don't see you here by 9:30 AM John, I am dropping it off at the shippers.

Met Scott down at the shop on Monday night where he helped with the sunroof panel. Welded in tabs on the corners and a couple more for good support. Will use some silicone to fill in the gap and make it waterproof. Lines up pretty good:

Also made some more progress on the rear diff mounts and got the exhaust worked out all the way back to the rear axle, so hopefully will be able to finish those two projects tomorrow night.

My buddy Josh had the camera rolling at the shop last night. I'm getting excited to actually drive this thing!

More progress made yesterday, but simply ran out of time to get the necessary things done to make it out for testing today. Looks like we'll shoot for testing next weekend instead.

With the pedal box installed, the pedals sit just a bit higher than normal. The BMW also has a 2" drop-off on the floor pan as you get closer to the door, so a little fab work was needed to even out the floor.

Battery will sit behind the passenger seat, and while its a tight fit to get it in there, we still needed a good sturdy tie-down.

Dave,

On your A-pillar support bar, I am pretty sure that you need that gusseted to the door X since it is cut like that.

I have mine done with taco gussets on the driver side. I didn't need it for the co-driver because I had it done as one solid bar.

Just want to make sure you clear it up so you don't come with a non-legal cage to your first event.

Yep, you're correct, we'll be adding those. It wasn't something that would've kept me from testing last weekend, so it was on the the other list. LOL

Now, I think the rules state that there must be two gussets at that junction, anyone know if they have to be opposite each other? If I use taco gussets on the front-upper/rear-lower, I'll never be able to take the dash out. If I put them rear-upper/front-lower, I make it harder to get out. Wondering if I can put both of them under the door X bar.

Actually, even if it's a solid bar it has to be gussetted to the bar.
It's this fun part from 8.3.2.1.5 from Article 253.
"If the doorbars and the windscreen pillar reinforcement are not situated in the same plane, the reinforcement may be made of fabricated sheet metal, provided it complies with dimensions in Article 253-8.2.14."

Dave. It does not specify in 8.2.14 or 8.3.2.1.5 that the two reinforcements have to be in any particular configuration.

Oh yeah, and I have at least two 110 gussets already made I think that you can have. I'll be up at the shop tonight so will dig them out. Trim here and there to fit...

Dave,

Maybe it's just me, but the X in the doors looks like it is very tall. Have a look at illustration 253-49 in Appendix J - Article 253. The top mounting of the door reinforcement bars must not be more than half the height of the door aperture.

Yep, its taller than I would've liked (harder to get in & out), but triangulates into the dash structure and harness bars which I think is good. I did measure the door opening and the rear bar passes by the door opening at less than half the height of the opening so I think we're good.

EDIT: Just looked at 253 again and realized I don't think I ever measured the distance on the front upper door X bar. Will check that tonight.

can a tech inspector confirm this is the case? My a-pillar supports do not intersect the upper portion of the X and are not gusseted.
