I think he mucked it up himself... I think I stepped on a toe or something with the way he's all yelling.

But I'll put us back on track...

Back to BMW talk!

Nobody was yelling Billy.
Purposely mischaracterizing anthers questions about you off topic comments is, if intentional, extremely rude, and a certain type of dishonesty.

You didn't step on a toe you simply stated something i have head from newbs a million times and i have no idea why, so I asked politely.

I did not say "You're stupid you fawkin newb poser I hate you i hate you i hate you!!!!!!!!!!!"

Why not tell us WHY? you want to play asphalt rally?

And why not tell me why you need to throw shit on me and pretend I was 'yelling"? What have I done to you that you need to backhandedly smear me?

Hi John, welcome to the internet. When you type words LIKE THIS it implies an added tone, so you can WIN at things that you aren't supposed to WIN at like YELLING!

But really, I like tarmac. I like gravel. I like snow. I want more of the latter. I didn't say I want ONLY tarmac stuff, I just said I wish there were more than 2 events in the US that were pure tarmac.

And now, more BMW talk plz.

Fawk your inter-net rigidity in insisting any capitalization is only and always yelling, fucking learn to look at context .
In the above context it was stressing the =difference between "HERE" and THERE. You really need to learn to read better.

Also on your reading disability---and logic failings, I asked why?...you had previously said that you wish for more tarmac---that is the what, you just now repeated the "what".

I asked "why". There is a difference, and repeating a description is not addressing the "why".

Welcome to Language Arts 75--remedial sub 100 level English.

Fuckin amazing, ask a simple question and get slandered and accused of yelling and being pissed and somebody whining "please don't respond".

OK more Beeemer talk:

God damn guys, I spend 3 hours wrenching on the car and come back to this? I think you guys should come on out and help me get this finished. winking smiley

I'm all for having a tarmac rally...as long as it doesn't involved a tow of over 1000 miles...come to think of it, I'm for any rally that doesn't involve towing 1000 miles...crap, picked a bad place to live. My real wish is for a snow rally that allows studs...and no restrictors.

....god damned lawyer straws

Now back to your BMW updates:

Transmission braces made of flimsy aluminum have no place on a rally car, and are known to fail even on tracked/auto-x-ed BMWs. The car I sourced my engine from came with such a piece. It had a hairline crack in it, so a buddy welded it up real quick back when I was getting around to putting the motor in trans back in a few months ago. I knew this wasn't a good fix, but it was good enough for a bit.

Here's a comparison of the two - old aluminum at the top, new steel on the bottom:

New transmission brace installed - this was a snap, just a few minutes to swap:

With the new brace in place it was time to reinstall the exhaust merge pipe and move on to fabbing the rest of the exhaust. Of course when we got towards the rear of the car we noticed the diff still wasn't in the car so decided to tackle that first.

First off, want to give huge thanks to Scott McCarty for all the help with welding on this little project. You Merkweird guys have it sooo good having a bolt-in kit for that Supra diff. Anyways, its finally in.

Have to go source some allen head bolts for the driveshaft-diff junction, the hex head bolts I had won't allow for a wrench because of the counter sunk toyota flange, and the driveshaft sticks about half way through the rear beam, so its hard to get tighten anything in there. Bonus feature of that is that the rear beam serves as a driveshaft loop.

Dave did you custom make that steel trans mount or is that an aftermarket piece that is available in the bimmer community?

Looks pretty home-made.
And importantly, nice shot of the floor and box gives me ideas on a easier and mo' better way to do it. Where's the scissors? Where's some cardboard?

It's from RallyRoad.net. The owner used to rally a Compact a few years back, and those Compomotive TH wheels I've got are from that car. I'm new to the BMW world, but I've heard of track guys having the stock aluminum unit crack over time. I figure with jumping its likely to be a problem even sooner.

Next up in the 'weak link' department is the engine mounts. From my conversations with RallyRoad they don't have any plans to make steel engine mounts, but IMO, jumping a car with a cast iron 6-cyl means something better than cast aluminum is in order.

John - you want to take a look at the car while I'm back in Denver for a week between the two Seattle events?

Got just about everything bolted to the car last night that needs to be in order to drive it around in the parking lot but still loads left to do before taking it out to test.

Anyone have recommendations on diff oil to use with the Surpa rear end?

In my mitsu I've used heavy shockproof, but with the online stuff I've pulled up seems to say 75w90 or 90wt is a common choice. Any LSD additive needed - or is that more of an item for daily driven cars that we don't want chirping when trying to parallel park.

75/90, and add some LSD additive, or the clutches will chatter. I use the Kendall stuff.

Didn't have a chance to wrap the headers to keep the engine bay heat down, so applied some of the foil I picked up from Mishimoto:

Got to shakedown the car yesterday. Went better than I expected for a brand new build, but we did have a few little issues.

Issue #1 - diff bushings. I was hoping to use something somewhat soft in hopes of isolating diff noise, but we may have used something too soft. Or it could be because there weren't washers between the bushings and the diff. My thought was that the bushing core (metal) was going to rest against the rear cover a washer wouldn't be needed. Thinking now the cover and bushing core may not have been in contace. Either way, looks like we'll try some stiffer bushings as the soft ones the first go:

Issue #2 was the transmission not wanting to allow grindless shifts from 4th back into 3rd. Looking for a new transmission. Aparently nobody bothers to rebuild these gearboxes, so parts are expensive and fixing them isn't cheap. The same box was used on the E36 & E46 328 & M3s. If you know of any in the Denver area, please shoot me a PM!

After we got back from the testing we put the car on the scales. Not as light as I'd hoped, but still not too bad considering we've got glass all around and no lightweight body panels.

Now, for shots of the car outside:

Hard to say really. 1st is not really useful, and the powerband is just, well, different from all the turbo 4s I've been racing for a decade. In the Evo I'd drop into first for the hairpins, but in the BMW, 2nd is just fine. Could simply be the stupid ratios: 4.20, 2.29, 1.66, 1.24, 1.00

The gearbox issues (no 4th - 3rd shifts) made it really hard to get into a rythm as I was just waiting for the speed to drop enough to put it in 2nd. Railing down the kinked straight using 3rd, 4th, & 5th felt pretty damned good. Probably topped out around 90mph despite not entering the straight in any sort of commited fashion...of course that 90 mph could've been 75 and 15mph of wheel spin. LOL

well maybe a simple gate for blocking 1-r gate---wait is it dogleg so 4-5 is straight back?

And no comment on the suspenders might be taken as good news; No snooze is good snooze and all?
