What? Can't JV get you quick rack guts for a couple hundred bucks or something?

No it's just a phone call or two and a BIG pile of cash to get 2.5 turns power rack.
For maybe 1/6 that an Xratty rack can be adapted.

It's 2.65 or 2.7 turns depending on who is measuring.

Thought I would revise my comment regarding the quickener and being sketchy...not on dirt it aint!

got a few really good beat run miles in and the steering feels just about perfect. Nicely weighted, a little on the heavy side, didn't seem to over tax the pump (which has a cooler hooked up to it) and not in the least bit twitchy.

Very easy to catch the kinda ham-fisted shit I kept trying to pull off!

I consider it a near necessary upgrade. I don't think I've gone for a spin since installing it.

Cons: adds a tiny bit of play, is pretty heavy feel even after installing power steering (forget about it on manual). Cost. Can be like $300 all in for all the bits and pieces you'll need.

Depending on how you engineering it you could lose some of the collapsiblity. Whatever you do, retain the double u-joint coupling so you don't have a spear aimed at your chest.

Yeah but for you an Xratty rack on a ever so slightly modded 240 crossmember and a little sleevie thang on the colums to mate with Xratty pinion spline and youse is sets. Only 2.6 turns but that good considering total cost and time to install.
Tie rods are same threads for the tie rod enderz.

i have a 2:1 howe laying around but that would give me about a 1.3 turns lock to lock in my 7.... perhaps i can sell or trade it for a 1.5:1

To bring this back from the dead, I've got some questions about the different kinds of quickeners. Most brands have a couple different variations, but Howe seems to have the most.

"Basic" Howe:
http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Howe-Steering-Quickeners,24447.html

"Standard" Howe:
http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Howe-151-Steering-Quickener,2025.html

"Stealth" Howe:
http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Howe-21-Steering-Quickener-Heavy-Duty,7732.html

Some I linked might not all the be the same ratio. But let's say they're all a 1.5:1 ratio. What is the difference? Just size/price? Is one more "durable" than the other or should I just go for the cheaper "knock off" brands that are almost half the price of name brands?

I used a "standard" type howe. It was only like $100 so i'm not sure there's much value in a cheaper product.
