B21FT turbo recommendations?
April 30, 2010 04:00PM
I'm going to be picking up a B21FT from fellow Volvophile Matt Miller, and word has it, it needs a new turbo.

The motor has an IPD turbo cam, stock ECU, etc. Is there a favorite, or "right" blower for this beasty? It will likely be my gp5 motor, asumming I eventually blow up the really nice gp2 one that John's building for me. Otherwise, it will be gratuitously swapped into a wagon or something winking smiley

Looking at Matt's notes, it looks like it currently has a 16G turbo fitted, and the motor itself came from a K.C. car and was recently rebuilt.

I am still at the bottom of the learning curve on turbos, but I think 16G is kinda huge, was this one of those turbobricks.com drag racing motors that starts to spool at 3500 rpm? I have a pile of turbos that might be more rally flavor.

Should I call? We could discuss turbos. I'm driving down to Wichita Saturday night to pick everything up, I'll be back on Sunday with an inventory and pictures.

gt3071r or gt3076r would be my pick of the garrett bunch.

But I'd get a s252 or s256 BorgWarner cos I like them better.

All of those turbos are a bit big for a gravel car.

The open class Tiburon's ran the 3071. But that was a full open class car capable of the tuning and testing to get it to work well. The 28 series stuff is probably better suited to privateer level.

I like the fact that the 30 series is t3 exhuast side. Not a fan of the t28 housings.

They come in assorted trims. But yeah they are on the big side for sure on a gravel car.

The motor is 2.1 liter, I figured it be enough displacement to spool the 3071r.

On the smaller end, you've got the gt2560rs (T25 exhuast side),the gt2860r and the gt2871r and gt2876r.

See the pattern? The begining is the code for the exhuast housing. gt28=t28 gt25=t25, gt30=t3. The end part is the compressor side in MM.

I've seen the GT2860RS with T3 exhaust housings before.

Even better ATP now has a T3 twin scroll housing for even faster spooling if you make a proper manifold for it.

That's new! Cool, so you could swap between 2860,2871,2876 CHRAs w/ T04b compressor housings if they have 53.8(76 trim) wheels and use the same exhuast housing. That's really neat. You could have 60mm,71mm, and 76mm on the shelf if you were so inclined.

So the A/R on the exhuast side there on the twin scroll is .82, They also make .64 and .48 on the gt2871r but not twin scroll...

Though it is twin scroll it's got a large a/r ratio, so it would be interesting to see spool comparisons and the top end hp comparisons on the smaller A/R turbos without twin scroll.

Any reason you opposed to the Stock Volvo or marginally larger XR4Ti Journal bearing T3? Kind a plus it bolts up to the stock manifold and wont' cost a fortune to rebuild or replace if you blow the thing up! Maybe even get a Cossie style housing for it? I got one on my XR4Ti and like it alot, got the whole turbo for $60 bucks! I get boost under 3 grand where it counts.

there's nothing wrong with (IMHO) with using a stock turbo, I'm just looking for feedback smiling smiley

Cossie turbo on a flat milled manifold.
Best damn all around compromise.
Get a 4x4 one for a little more upgrade on the compressor side than the 2wd is.

I guarantee you'll love it.
