I hate these things with a passion. Does anybody do away with them in favor of something faster to remove and install? Bolt and nut? Zipties? A Twig?

I don't think this is what they're made for, but I thought of these:

Mine NEVER seem to come out in 5 seconds. I spent 20 mins on one yesterday. My subframe brace doesnt help either.

They aren't there for load, just to keep the axle from sliding outwards and off the splines. So you could use safety wire or even a smaller diameter pin and a couple wraps of tape to keep it in place. A bonus with the smaller pin or wire is the axle could be installed 180* out then. Much easier in a hurried service.

LT730.

5 seconds is generous.

That looks way easier than using drill bits. It's kinda sketchy when they break.

I have these: http://www.harborfreight.com/5-piece-long-drive-pin-punch-set-93111.html
and use the 3/16, its just a smidge smaller than the 5mm that the roll pins probably are. No magnetic tip, though.

No, I'm going for the subaru tool. I've fucked enough 3/16 punches to spend $$ on one again.

I recommend replacing that time-consuming roll-pin with six bolts per axle, preferably the kind with 12-pt triple-square EZ-Strip heads that are strategically designed to trap any dirt and grease in the nearby vicinity.

For pushing the roll pins out on my subie, I just use an appropriately-sized torx head screwdriver where the body is the diameter of the pin and the head fits inside of the pin. It's got a nice shoulder and therefore good bite.

Zero problems.

You forgot to mention tearing the boot when the 12pt slips...
