Yikes.

Form follows function.
- If the cage is intended to save one's ass in the event of a rollover or sideways collision with a tree or rock, the cage looks proper.
- If the cage is intended to give the impression of race car on campus, where 600awhp daily drivers prowl in search of the odd red light battle or perhaps TIME ATTACK at the local autox, then the cage can be poseur.

All the same? Damn.

the craftsmanship doesn't look that bad (top/closest notch looks decent, so does that weld), too bad the design sucks.

I guess that's the real danger with having decent tools and knowing how to use them, but no understanding of cage design/theory at all.

Over on DirtyImpreza, on a fairly regular basis, we get guys who can weld or whatever, asking how to build a rally cage....we have to politely yell at them to please NOT build their first cage on their own. Or even let a 'buddy with their own shop' do it.....

He should be good for the Robin Hood Rally though. Actually overkill for them.

Here's the best pic I have of the naked rear deck in an Evo:

There's speaker holes, but pretty far inboard.

Edit: I was milling around outside and curious and took a look. There's big rectangular cut-outs on the rear deck by the C-pillars that they must've used.

That's actually a pretty common design for a drag race cage. I've seen a lot of local (reputable) shops build them similarly and they pass tech at the drag strip...

It's a good design for throwing a lot of crap in the rear too.
Think of all the tires and coolers you could throw back there, or the row of child seats.

Rally rules aren't the only rules.

Yep, there was a guy on one of the Evo boards who had a cage with those weird bent rear stays. Cage was certified to 8 seconds IIRC.

from what i have gathered about NHRA cage design, that would not be legal for an 8 second car but i could be wrong.

Hopefully he's still on the stock turbo then.

Nope he's running something bigger. The guy that owns the car used to run an 8 second first gen eagle talon.

Nubby- The back of the cage does actually go through the speaker holes. Yeah it's legal but I wouldn't trust it.
