It's not the engine that I think doesn't make sense, its the type of car you get stuck with... The only newer cars these days to become light enough are FWD, which I wouldn't mind driving, but what would you do for a transmission?
If you have to shove it into an older RWD car, you're back to having troubles finding body panels and what not when you smack stuff/roll. Welcome to the cult of JVL drink the koolaid or be banned. |

well one i have become partial to is the 1st gen rx7s. cheap, still plentiful, and pretty light. the caged stripped roller in the my garage came in at 1700lbs. take the cage out put some light seats with this engine combo in you are in the sub 2000 mark. kind of silly to do all that work and not race it but to each their own.

The next two on the list after the Mazda transmission are VW bus transaxle for the sand rail set and Type 9 for the Lotus 7 replica crowd. I wonder why I would want to get "stuck" with a light RWD BMW 1600? It must impossible to get anything for an old POS like that. http://store.nexternal.com/shared/StoreFront/default.asp?CS=ireland&StoreType=BtoC&Count1=96447169&Count2=13587594 Yep, downright obscure...you can't get anything useful for a daily driver like replacement door weatherstripping and such http://www.pelicanparts.com/euro/catalog/shopcart/B136/POR_B136_BDYsel_pg1.htm |

Or any on the Pelican site, for the record, lol. However, I'm not saying you can't find parts for the old RWD cars, its just getting harder. My corolla is that way, RX7's are getting that way, Merkurs have been (I'm not sure how light they get), I've honestly NEVER seen a BMW 2002 outside of rally, E30 325i's are super over priced, and volvos, the only cars that are plentiful (and also according to JVL, god's gift to rallying, next to ford escorts) are too heavy. That was my point. It's not that you can't, its more, "is it really worth the hunt?" I'm not even racing yet and I'm already working on my "OK, when I bend/break this part, how will I replace it" plan. And honestly, with the supply I'm finding, if I could do it again, I'd be building a golf, focus, or CRX. Now a CRX with a busa engine, that would frickin scream. Timmy, Volvo 240s are only a little heavier than your Corolla, but they come with an engine 50% larger that is stronger than most engines out there and will be happy and relaible and relatively unstressed making BHP and Ft/LB you motor will never do, and do it for cheap.
That sounds like a whole lotta win for the average guy. John Vanlandingham Sleezattle, WA, USA Vive le Prole-le-ralliat www.rallyrace.net/jvab CALL +1 206 431-9696 Remember! Pacific Standard Time is 3 hours behind Eastern Standard Time. |

Interesting project. I like this kind of engineering but It doesn't seem like the Hyabusa is an engine that's really suited to rally. No torque and fuck all for power until you to at least 5000 rpm. You're gonna want a really short final drive and a super close ratio gearbox to make that work well. But it will sound very cool.
Personally, this looks more interesting to me: http://www.h1v8.com/page/page/1562068.htm |

We're pulling power off the crank after the 1.5:1 primary reduction that's already in the engine. The output to the flywheel never goes over 7K RPM and there is no need to change anything in the drivetrain or use a special clutch/flywheel. The Hartley is beautiful but it also costs $30K and requires everything downstream of it to be changed out full huge $ spec to handle the high RPM. |

It sounds really awesome! Speed costs money, how fast do you want to go? |
