"HARD" gravel tires
July 20, 2010 09:47AM
Anyone used the Hankook r204, or the Yoko A036?

both the same type of concept...How do they work?

The hankook:

The Yoko:

Do these things actually work well?

A rally coming up is really short, but eats tires. IN 50KM of stage last year, i roasted 6 medium compound Hankooks, and could have used 8!

Wondering if these things will actually work.

Sure, why not?
IF there was essentially packed down, little loose gravel.
I've been on summer roads where its nearly asphalt like and there we don't need big voids, we need lotsa rubber contacting the ground.

They'd be fun street tires later too.

this is the road we are looking at.

I think this photo is probably after 1 full pass of 20 cars.

We run the road 6 times, so it gets swept pretty good "in the groove" If you fall out...well your toast, but that's no surprise. Don't get off line.

I understand the Lassa wears really well - last car I co-drove was on them and the driver was amazed at the life and the grip. He had nothing bad to say about them.
I doubt the tires above are the right choice.

have the Lassa Rally 3's on the XR, they have done Oregon Trail and Idaho, plus about 1000 miles of commuting and a play day, I have a new set of rally 2's, and they are supposed to wear even longer

I did Prescott (100plus transit) seed 9 and desert storm this past year on 6 tires (lassa rally 2s) and 4 still look very good for 1 more Gorman event.

Let me know if you'd like to order a set.

Why are you guys wasting money on buying new hard tires? Just buy some used ones that are all dried up and hard as rocks and they'll last forever. In 4 years the only wear I ever saw to my old dried up michelins was when they flew apart into little pieces because I like to drive on flats.

Now if you want grip you're going to go with something other than hockey pucks...

the Lassa's are considered 'medium'.

Sorry, i'm not necessarily talking about "HARD" compound gravel tires.

more about tires for a HARD road surface. Tires that will give you more grip on this type of surface, and not destroy themselves in 25 km.

I gotcha, Chris.
Even though the lower one, the Yoko looks inspired by older Pirelli SG whatever that's seemed popular on some baked dry French or Italian stages, where the actual surface BASE is rock hard, your photo shows a fair amount of loose stuff.
Not DEEP so I think you don't need huge voids or block spacing but a fair amount of loose stuff...
Hard call.
Maybe be brave, try something else that nobody dares try cause they never saw their heroes use it.

I've run both tires at hillclimbs. I don't think either would be a good choice for the road you've shown. I thought the hankooks would be better than they turned out...but maybe I just wasn't on the right road surface, and I was using the hard compound they offered. On loose dirt it felt like I was driving summer tires on ice, and on packed dirt, I'd say they were just OK.

I've run the Yokos at Pikes Peak back when the road was 50/50 dirt/pavement and they did very well. I also used them at a local hillclimb event (all dirt), and was very happy with them, but once you're 'off line' they don't grip all that well. Here's a video of our run with them:

FWIW, the tread compound is actually pretty soft still, but you'll get much less deflection because the tread depth is probably half of a normal gravel rally tire.

so...they do work... http://www.kwrc.on.ca/2010/Results/GCFR/GCFRResults.html ... We were first o/a, and set the new stage record (by 1 second)

They lasted the 50km...They might not have more "race" miles in them, but i'll probably flip them on the rims and run them for Reece.

They can be a bit sketchy in the loose stuff. The Road i think was perfect for them this year, with little to no loose stuff, and a very hard base.

I wasn't the only one to use them...the 2nd place finisher used them as well.

I used Mediums which showed some wear. He used Hards, which did not wear as much (obviously).

Friends did completely kill 4 "traditional" gravel tires in 4 of the 6 stages, and threw on some slightly used tires for the last 2 stages.

Maybe I missed it, but which tire did you end up using Chris?
