So, at High Desert Trails we suddenly started smoking out the tailpipe and going through 1qt of oil per 5 mile stage (and then lost a quart of oil just idling in service). so we DNF'd and I ran compression and leak down tests (hoping it was just a turbo seal, but the turbo came back fine) and couldn't quite pin point it. One cylinder was lower than the rest, with a 'low' leak down result, but nothing alarming.
Still, something wasn't right with that cylinder, and I've always wanted to tear down an engine, so bought an engine stand, borrowed a cherry picker and ripped into it. This is what I found.... Hairline fracture of the 2nd ring land.... ![]() Here's the top... ![]() Here's what the front end looked like after Desert Storm: ![]() ![]() Time to start cutting out the bent bits, and replacing them with better bits... ![]() bye bye sub frame brace....and bye bye radiator support... ![]() test fit the DOM shit... ![]() ![]() crap....I can't seem to find the data card with all the finished pics. Well, the engine itself is almost the same. Mahle forged pistons, ACL bearings, stock STI rods and crank, and the deck is CLOSED (which is a cool piece of machine shop work) and about 9:1 CR. I'll be running a mix of pump and race gas, around 94 Octane. ![]() BIG THANKS to Jeremy www.OutfrontMotorsports.com for such a great deal on the block and all the help. They're in SoCal I'll post up more when I find that damned memory card. 'Other Stuff' Engine mostly replaced....new Crawford AOS, lots of new hoses, new Mishimoto dual fans, COBB lightweight crank, Autometer gauges, newly wrapped headers, and turbo blanket. That's right....a blanket for my turrrrrrbO! ![]() I like sponsors and free stuff....thanks COBB! ![]() Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 08/18/2010 02:02AM by Jon Burke. |

it drains back into the crank case, its not a 'catch can'. besides, look at the engine bay, where the fawk else am I supposed to put it!? LOL |

I know it drains back...but it's still Hot oil. Those lines get soft, and they can melt. I've seen a couple cars burn to the ground with AOS's over there. I know it's tight...i've got mine cover kinda above the brake master cylinder. Or put it where the a/c compressor used to be...bolted to the engine...actually a perfect spot. |

If it burns to the ground, big deal. It's just money... I mean look at the engine compartment: where is it 'spossed to fit..?? I think a nice plastic bottle with some water hose should be just fiiiiiiiiiine... |

I disagree...its not hot oil pumping through those lines, its hot air with oily residue in it....I could pull one of those lines for an entire stage and just have it vent to atmosphere and it wouldn't catch fire. If you have large amounts of oil pumping through there, something is wrong. Now I HAVE had the power steering pump touch the turbo, burn through, spew power steering fluid everywhere and catch fire. that definitely sucked, thank god it only happened at a rallycross. I have a lot of shielding on those lines now! |

right.....
look....turbo is wrapped, Downpipe is wrapped, headers are wrapped, all lines are brand spanking new and I'll probably put some heat shielding on them as well because I have some lying around. 99.99% of subarus out there have the AOS in that location, I ain't changin' it ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Yeah there's an excellent idea, and a ground down crank is lighter too!!! |
