Alright, I'm a n00b first and foremost, I'm wanting to get started on stage rally after participating in a rally-x a while back (I rocked my '79 Volvo 245 in all of its mustard glory). I grew up around racing and have participated in flat track motorcycle racing and FormulaSAE as well. This is my first car build/project acquisition and I'm needing a little advice on finishing up the cage. The car (VW MK2 16v) was purchased out of California with previous work being done by Cardini Motorsports(?) and we're trying to get it prep'd for the Mt.Hood Rally.
The cage was built out of 1.500 x .120 tubing so it should meet NASA specs for a car this light. Will I have problems with this tubing, as I know that Rally America is only allowing 1.750. I'm looking for the contact of a NASA scrutineer so I can talk to them and see about getting the car log booked. We're located in Corvallis Oregon, and any help would be great. I'll post a link to some pics in a day or so, they're too big to attach right now. |

When was the cage built? What size is the main hoop? Need pics. You can post them here or send them to my email mrmagic@olynet.com . |

http://i1005.photobucket.com/albums/af174/culberro/stuff030.jpg I'll get some inside cage pics in the morning. The entire cage is made out of 1.5 x 0.120 DOM. The cage was completed two are three years ago, maybe more. |

Didn't say who had the car before you.... And, is it logbooked anywhere? What suspension does it have on it? |
The car was purchased from a guy named Michael Powers out of Venice Ca, and the car was fab'd up by Cardini Motorsports (http://www.cardinimotorsport.com/index.php?section=14), just scroll down until you get to the mk2 golf.
For suspenders it has bilsteins that have been revalved and they're sporting some serious heavy springs (350F/250R) |

For a NASA book it will need to have roof X or V bars, the A-pillar support bar added and it should have sill bars. The door X is pretty far up in that car. It would be nice to get a copy of a receipt dating the cage as it currently isn't Rally America compliant with that small tubing and V in the main hoop.

OK whip them off and look for stamped or etched in numbers at the top. Those spring rates are like every other gawddam California car i've seen: STOOOPID stiff, way overboard. I supply 275 fronts and that is cuase North american cars tend to be a bit heavier and because our roads are flat FAST---even if'n weeze aint. Back I do 175 x 14" also whip apart the fronts and measure the travel, lemme know*... I've done the suspenders on the East and West coasts fastest Golves and both those boys say the stuff I've supplied works as good as anything they've driven and my stuff in Ontario has won a buncha events overall and many in top 10 OA and Ontario Championship overall so i guess i make good guess--better than everything I see coming from down there (shit man, no wonder the boys down ther are always whining or bragging how "rough" their rallies are: NOBODY HAS A FUCKING CLUE and they spring the poor cars 25-50% too stiff and usually with springs that are certain to coil bind..ie way too short. I've seen things from SoCal that would coil bind in 2.75" travel on a shock with nearly 8" travel.Oi Oi oi oi oi...... Come on whip that stuff apart and let's get it sorted while you have time..Find my phone and call in the day and I can yack at you better than I type. *virtually everybody who doesn't come to me first gets the same junk way too short Bilsteins but chin up, the short junk can be made longer, at least I get it made longer for a normal re-vale price, I sent 6 of Tom Buress', our local 2wd terrorist down and they came back like 180mm travel up from a disgusting short 160---way too short, so take an insert out, just spin off the nut at the bottom and then screw the allen thing inward and separate, then measure the shft from body to the start of the threads and get back, OK. Some more interior cage picks:

When I'm doing that I may just have to lower the door x because like you said, it's pretty high and makes entry/exit a little awkward. Will I need to x-brace the rear main roll hoop as well? Dash bar? Thanks for the help so far. |

If you can provide a verified date of construction for the cage it will greatly affect the mods needed on the cage. So leave the Bilsteins for a minute and call Cardini..... |
